Tiger Woods: Why His Strong Run of Form Won't Last Through Sunday at Pebble

Scott SemmlerJun 7, 2018

Tiger Woods will fall short tomorrow when he plays in one of the final groups at Pebble Beach Golf Links on the final day of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Woods vaulted himself back into contention on Saturday, shooting a five-under 67 for a tie for third place. He will be playing in the second-to-last group on Sunday.

Woods has not been the same player on Sundays as we have seen in the past. His golf game continues to impress and grow stronger, but that seems to be limited when he tees it up in the final round.

He held a share of the lead just two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi, only to surrender the championship to Robert Rock and finish in third place.

On Sunday, there will be far too many players standing in Woods' way for him to win his first PGA Tour tournament since 2009.

Most notably, Charlie Wi, who fired a three-under round at Spyglass Hill Golf Course—arguably the hardest of the National Pro-Am's three courses—has played incredible golf the last three days and shows no sign of slowing down.

However, the biggest contender heading into Sunday is none other than the two-time winner of this event, Dustin Johnson.

Pebble Beach naturally fits Johnson's eye; he has yet to truly falter on its surface. He shot nine-under on Thursday and is definitely capable of putting up the same number on Sunday.

Currently, Johnson is six strokes behind Charlie Wi.

But Woods will obviously contend tomorrow at Pebble Beach. He loves the course, just as Johnson does, and was lights out on Saturday on the back nine. However, the four strokes will be awfully hard to make up against Wi.

The weather is supposed to be beautiful on Sunday at Pebble Beach, which means low scores, but it is obvious Woods will need to go much lower than five-under in order to claim victory.
