MIA Middle Finger: Madonna Has No Place to Be Outraged over Super Bowl Incident
Not only did Super Bowl XLVI provide an exciting football game between the New York Giants and New England Patriots, but it produced the middle finger heard 'round the world courtesy of halftime performer M.I.A. This has Madonna upset, but it's a bit hypocritical on her part.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Madonna isn't too appreciative of M.I.A.'s gesture, as it basically upstaged her performance. She also feels as though it ruined the "loving" mood she believes her lip syncing and gyrating created.
"I was really surprised. I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it. I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity it seemed negative. It’s such a teenager . . . irrelevant thing to do. . . there was such a feeling of love and unity there what was the point? It was just out of place.

Madonna is right in that it was somewhat out of place, and it was inappropriate, even though it's being blown out of proportion. But Florio makes a great point regarding Madonna. It's no secret that Madonna hasn't exactly been a great role model over the years. In fact, what M.I.A. did is precisely something Madonna would have done back when she was relevant.
Obviously, M.I.A. was merely trying to make a name for herself on the country's biggest stage, and, quite frankly, it worked, so it's tough to blame her for doing what she did. She knew that she had a major opportunity, and while the way she made headlines may not have been ideal, she seized the opportunity.
Truth be told, M.I.A.'s one-finger salute was the only interesting thing of the whole performance. I had thoughts that Madonna was over the hill prior to the Super Bowl, and my suspicions were proven right, as the whole thing truly was a train wreck.
Many have been saying how impressive it was that a 53-year-old woman was able to move around so much on stage. I'm not disputing that, but the whole thing was far too theatrical and over-the-top to be taken seriously. Not to mention the fact that Madonna almost fell a couple times and had to be helped up.
The fact of the matter is that Madonna isn't upset because M.I.A. did something she deemed to be inappropriate. Rather, she is upset because M.I.A.'s actions upstaged her.
Madonna is little more than a has-been at this point who is desperately trying to cling to her past glory. She probably feels like she was robbed of that by M.I.A., and that is what has brought on this holier-than-thou attitude she is fostering. Madonna is conveniently forgetting about some of the stunts she has pulled in the past, and that makes her little more than a hypocrite in this case.
