Federer and his Swiss compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, were both defeated in their opening day singles matches by John Isner and Mardy Fish, respectively, leaving the hopes of a nation on the rackets of the Federer/Wawrinka pairing as they prepared to enter Saturday's doubles match against Mike Bryan and Mardy Fish.

In similar to fashion to Federer's singles match against John Isner, the Swiss appeared poised to change the currents of this tie after he and Wawrinka captured the opening set, 6-4.

But as a constant recurrence of deja vu to Federer and his fan base, the American team ultimately proved too motivated and cohesive for the Swiss resistance taking the final three sets, 6-3.

It can only be appropriately described as astonishing for the Swiss to have been comprehensively swept by the Americans in Switzerland on clay against a Federer-led team.

With this victory in hand, the Americans have secured the spot in the Davis Cup Quarterfinals.

UPDATE: The United States will be taking on France in the Davis Cup Quarterfinals after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took out Frank Dancevic to secure the tie for the French.
