Manchester United vs Liverpool: Patrice Evra Foolish by Celebrating After Win

Nicholas GossFeb 11, 2012

Manchester United left back Patrice Evra embarrassed himself with his over the top, unneeded celebration after his club defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

If you had just turned on the match, you would have though United had just won a trophy after seeing Evra foolishly celebrate after the final whistle had blown.

It was the first meeting between the two club's since Luis Suarez was banned eight matches by the FA for racially abusing Evra in an October match at Anfield.

Evra was seen jumping up and down after the match had concluded, and was just parading around the pitch like a clown.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson also was not happy with Evra's celebration, saying via Soccernet:

"

Evra's post-match celebrations, aimed at the United fans but in the direct vicinity of Suarez, could also be deemed potentially inciting behaviour. Ferguson claimed he did not see Evra's actions, but when informed of the incident the Scot replied :"He shouldn't have done that.

"

I understand it was a difficult match to play in because of the drama surrounding Evra and Suarez, but this celebration was unacceptable.

Manchester United is a prestigious club, and they don't need their captain celebrating like this after a win against a club they should have beaten.

Suarez did not help the match go smoothly with his refusal to shake Evra's hand (watch here) in the normal pre-match hand shakes between the two clubs, which went even further south when United center back Rio Ferdinand refused to shake Suarez's hand.

Suarez was wrong to abuse Evra, and he was wrong to snub him in the hand shakes prior to the match, but Evra, as captain of Manchester United, must set the right example to follow for his teammates and fans.

Would Ryan Giggs celebrate like that under those circumstances? Probably not.

I think Giggs would have handled himself with class and shifted his focus to the next match, because he is a true professional, unlike Evra.

Evra should be excited after this massive victory for United, but his celebration was foolish and it embarrassed his club.
