Stefon Diggs: Commitment to Maryland Is a Refreshing Twist
Perhaps the last big commitment of this recruiting season was Stefon Diggs committing to Maryland. It came as a shocker to some and for legitimate reasons.
The surprised people were wondering why he would choose Maryland, of all teams, to play for. He had three other schools that wanted him big time like Florida, Ohio State and Auburn. All made it to bowl games; Maryland went 2-10.
They hadn't garnered the best recruits and hadn't been very successful. It perplexed people why he would choose Maryland.
Well, I think I and a lot of other people know: He wanted to stay true to his heart and home.
The recruiting process has turned into a sensational media story that is under close observation and is constantly being talked about. All of the big commitments are televised and made like a huge ceremony. Most of the recruits also seem to have an ego like they can instantly turn around a football program.
This is why I love Diggs. He doesn't brag a lot or take up the headlines; all he does is play great football.
With all these big schools giving scholarships to the best players, these players choose the school that they think can win the most championships and give them an NFL career.
It almost seems like the passion is lost. A lot of recruits don't choose their long-loved school, but instead choose the one that they think will succeed the most. It is no longer about the heart; it is about the popularity.
But Diggs knew that there would be no instant national championship at Maryland. He knew that they would have no guarantee of instant success. But that didn't matter to him. He loved his home state and loved his choice in his college.
Now Diggs can help out this Maryland team immensely and show people that he can succeed wherever he goes. He will play his heart out for the Terrapins every game and not settle for anything less.
His commitment is more than just a letter of intent.
