NBA Rumors: Gilbert Arenas Is Best PG Option for Desperate Lakers

Wes ODonnellFeb 14, 2012

The Los Angeles Lakers can't go wrong with Gilbert Arenas at point guard.

Worst-case scenario: They realize he isn't healthy and/or won't help them at all. They could do a lot worse for a veteran's minimum of $1.4 million.

Reports indicate that the Lakers have also looked into Ramon Sessions and Johnny Flynn, but neither of them offer the upside of Arenas.

The 30-year-old guard held a workout in Los Angeles on Sunday and as many as three Lakers officials reportedly attended. Their main concern, Arenas' health, remains unanswered, although things are looking up:

"

Sources say he has worked his way into shape and is feeling better than he has in years after having the same platelet-rich therapy treatment conducted on his knees that the Lakers' Kobe Bryant and Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez went through. Arenas also had the procedure done on his hips as a preemptive measure that is often used on athletes who, like Arenas, have a history of knee problems.

"

The Lakers are only 16-12 this season and average only 92.7 points per game. They're one of the few teams that can actually play defense and allow the fourth-lowest amount of points in the league at only 90.9 points per game.

They haven't been consistent at all in recent weeks, though, and star guard Kobe Bryant leads the league in scoring at 29.3 points per game. The No. 2 scorer, LeBron James, averages 27.9.

Kobe's battled a wrist injury this season but has been counted on more than any Lakers fan would. So far this year he's attempted a league-high 675 shots. No. 2 on the list, Kevin Durant, has attempted 152 fewer shots.

Needless to say, the Lakers need help if they expect Kobe to last the season.

Arenas at least gives them that opportunity. Flynn and Sessions hover between nine and 11 points per game for their careers, respectively. Flynn is only putting up about four per game this season while Sessions is scoring about 10 per game.

While every little bit counts, the Lakers stand to gain the most from adding Arenas. Not only is he a veteran who has the potential to score double digits, but more importantly he can help Kobe shoulder the load.

This Lakers team is desperate, but they stand to lose the least and gain the most from adding Gilbert Arenas.
