NFL Rumors: Signing Plaxico Burress Would Be Terrific Move by Eagles

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

The Philadelphia Eagles lacked diversity in their receiving corps this season and, with DeSean Jackson's future up in the air, the team has a glaring need at the position heading into the offseason. That's why pursuing impending free-agent Plaxico Burress would be a savvy move.

Howard Eskin of NBC Philadelphia tweeted earlier in the week that it's something Burress has already been thinking about:

Burress made a smooth transition back to the NFL after missing two seasons due to the infamous club incident and the fallout from it. He caught 45 passes for over 600 yards and, more impressively, eight touchdowns for the New York Jets.

While those numbers are not going to jump off the page at you, it's important to remember Mark Sanchez was his quarterback. Playing with a subpar QB makes it difficult to put up any sort of dominant statistics.

He would be a nice fit with the Eagles after the team's disappointing season. After so much preseason hype, a slow start ended up dooming their entire season.

The biggest reason for the slide was Michael Vick being unable to match his success from the 2012 season. His touchdown-to-turnover difference dropped from plus-21 to plus-one, which pretty much tells you everything about his year.

Burress would give him a much-needed red-zone threat at 6'5''. He's no longer the complete receiver he once was, but for key situations he's a nice piece to have available.

Vick has proven he can get the job done if the circumstances are right. In this case that means surrounding him with as much talent as possible so they can create matchup problems for the defense as well as open up the deep ball, which teams weren't giving Philadelphia this season.

Since Burress is seemingly hoping the Eagles come calling, they should be able to sign him for a reasonable price.

He didn't have any off-field issues with the Jets, so hopefully his time away helped him mature a little bit so that he can enjoy the second half of his career uninterrupted.

All told, signing Burress makes perfect sense for the Eagles. He would be a cost-effective option to help Vick so the team can focus some other resources on improving the team's defense, which appeared to forget how to tackle at times in 2011.

That's what they call a win-win situation.
