Ohio State Football Recruiting: Urban Meyer's Stellar Class Needs Stefon Diggs

Adam WellsFeb 10, 2012

To the surprise of no one, new Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer made an instant impact on the recruiting scene. The Buckeyes finished near the top of most class rankings after National Signing Day, but there is one big piece missing from the puzzle: Stefon Diggs.

The prized five-star wide receiver has been toying with schools during the recruiting season. He has spent most of his time soaking up all the adoration everyone is throwing his way. He is ready to stop teasing everyone and will make a decision on his future Friday evening

While there is a lot of speculation about where Diggs is going—Maryland is the front-runner—Meyer and the Buckeyes need him to put the stamp on this recruiting class.

Their receiving corps is going to take a huge hit with DeVier Posey graduating. They were able to land four-star wideout Michael Thomas, who will provide an upgrade, but the Buckeyes still need that one impact pass-catcher to get the offense back on track.

Diggs is a gifted athlete with true big-play capability on the outside. His experience as a running back would provide another dimension for Meyer and the Buckeyes to use on offense.

The fact that Ohio State is still in the mix for Diggs' services speaks volumes about Meyer's ability as a recruiter. According to Dave Hooker of ESPN.com, the Buckeyes have only been in on the star receiver for about a month.

Maryland has been in Diggs' backyard his entire life, so it is no surprise that he would be favoring the Terps over everyone else.

That said, Meyer can sell Diggs on two things that Randy Edsall can't. First, the opportunity to win and compete for BCS Championships. Even though the Buckeyes are banned from a bowl game next season, they will be ready to challenge for the Big Ten title in 2013.

Second, Diggs will get more national exposure playing for Ohio State. With all due respect to Maryland, there are not a lot of casual fans going out of their way to watch a 2-10 ACC team play football on Saturday.

The Buckeyes will get featured on national television even if they are mediocre, which won't happen under Meyer.

There is still a lot of work to be done for the Buckeyes to approach the level they were at before the Jim Tressel fiasco went down, but Diggs would be the cherry on top of the sundae that will get them there right away.
