Stefon Diggs Announcement: Report Says Maryland Is the Choice

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

The majority of the top college football recruits in the country have already decided what school they'll be representing for the next 3-4 years. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is not one of them, but he's expected to make his decision at some point today.

He's had offers from nearly every school in the country, but as he is getting closer and closer toward making a decision, he has narrowed the list down to only a few programs. Those schools include Florida, Maryland, Ohio State and Auburn.

While, of course, every school is hoping it is the lucky one to land the speedster wide receiver, we may have found out where he is going before he's even opened his mouth on the record. There is now a Washington Post report claiming that he will become a Maryland Terrapin.

If this is in fact true, it's absolutely huge for this program. Diggs wouldn't just help improve an offense that was ranked 75th in passing and only averaged 23 points per game last year. He'd change the culture of a program that isn't use to landing big-name recruits on the football side like Diggs.

This is a 5-star wide receiver with elite speed that not too many players on the football field can keep up with. He'd by far be the best player Maryland has recruited this season and probably the best player the Terps have recruited in decades. A player like this can really change the future of a program.

As for right now, Maryland would be improved drastically. While he won't be able to help a defense that was ranked 102nd in points allowed, he can make things a lot easier on the offensive side of the ball. With his blazing speed, he'll stretch the defense and make things easier for the other receivers around him like Kerry Boykins and Kevin Dorsey. It also gives the Terrapins a playmaker who can make a huge difference on this team.

He can also contribute on special teams, as he's a great punt returner and a threat to take it the distance every time the ball is in his hands. That's another plus for Maryland, as the Terps were ranked 11th in the ACC last year in averaging only 5.28 yards per return.

Even if quarterback Danny O'Brien continues to seek a transfer, I'm sure the Terrapins will take this addition any day. He's a quarterback that only completed 56 percent of his passes and threw three more interceptions than touchdowns a year ago. And with a receiver like Diggs, whoever the quarterback is, will have a new weapon to throw the ball to.

It takes the whole team to be successful, but only takes one huge player to really change the direction a program is going. This is exactly what head coach Randy Edsall was brought here to do, and this will be a sign of great things to come, if the reports are true.

We saw another top receiver decide to stay home in Dorial Green-Beckham. It looks like we may have another making the same decision and in turn another program will be changed forever.
