Manchester United vs. Liverpool: Red Devils Will Continue Roll Toward EPL Title

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Manchester United sits just two points behind rival Manchester City despite a frustrating midseason swoon. Saturday's clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford provides the perfect opportunity to pick up three points to keep the pressure on City.

The Red Devils have won the Premier League in four of the past five seasons, so it's a bit different to see them trying to play catch-up during the season's second half. Usually it's them with the lead forcing other teams to chase them down.

United will also be seeking revenge for an FA Cup loss to the Reds a couple weeks ago. It was just the latest tournament disappointment for the powerhouse, already dropping out of the Champions League and Carling Cup earlier in the season.

If there is any silver lining to those defeats it's that Sir Alex Ferguson will be able to place a lot more focus on league play. Usually he is trying to juggle lineups while playing deep into those other competitions, but now he only has the Europa League to take attention away.

What makes that even more meaningful is United's improving health. The squad has been ravaged by injuries this season, which has surely played a role in the team's lack of dominance, but slowly players are starting to return to give Ferguson options.

Add it all up and there's a strong possibility the Red Devils make a mad dash toward another EPL title, starting with a win on Saturday.

Manchester United's offense has been much more effective at home while Liverpool's defense has been far less effective on the road. An open style of play will certainly favor the home squad this weekend.

As usual, Wayne Rooney will be the key. The Red Devils are at their best when he's being aggressive on the attack like he was against Chelsea. If he can bring a similar level of intensity against the Reds, United will be in great shape.

You can be sure Ferguson has spent the week of training telling his players how important every point will be down the stretch.

Look for United to come out on a mission, leading to a crucial victory and the EPL lead for at least one day until City plays Aston Villa on Sunday.

Prediction: Manchester United 2, Liverpool 1
