John Cena: What Went Wrong with the Biggest WWE Enigma?

Aakash VasaFeb 9, 2012

Hello, Bleachers, this is my first article here on B/R! Today, I'm going to focus on the ever-so-controversial superstar that is John Felix Anthony Cena.

June 27, 2002

This was the day John Cena made his WWE debut answering an open challenge put forth by Kurt Angle. He put on an entertaining match then, showing the world that he might be a star to watch out for.

Ten years down the line, John Cena will head to Wrestlemania 28 in Miami, Florida to face Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, in what is being touted as the greatest wrestling match of all time.

After completing nearly 10 years in the WWE, Cena has accumulated a staggering amount of accolades which go something like this:

  • 12-time World/WWE Champion
  • Four-time Tag Team Champion
  • Three-time United States Champion
  • A Royal Rumble Winner (2008)

A majority of wrestlers would die to achieve even a bit of the success that Cena has achieved throughout his storied career.

Somewhere during 2005, when he got drafted to Raw, Cena dropped his Thuganomics gimmick, and became 'SuperCena,' the guy we've loved (to hate).

Slowly and steadily, Cena's fanbase dwindled, as he overcame all odds—every timeto come out on top in each match.

The WWE refused to acknowledge our voices, refused to change his character (far less turn him heel), and we are still enduring the bore that Cena has turned into.

So what exactly went wrong for WWE's resident Superman: Let's find out.

1. He doesn't lose.

When a wrestler overcomes the odds and wins, it's a nice story.

When he does it every single night for seven years in a row, it's a disaster.

That's what happened to Cena. He's never tapped out, he's never been pinned cleanly, he's never looked vulnerable.

How can the WWE expect us to watch a Cena match, when we know how it's going to turn out? Cena needs to lose matches, straight up, without any interferences.

That'll make him a tad less irritating.

2. He's lazy.

Let me get this straight: John Cena can wrestle.

He isn't the face of the company for no reason. If you don't believe me, check out his debut match with Kurt Angle, and of course, check out his bout with CM Punk at Money In The Bank 2011, the only 5-star match in 15 years, according to Dave Meltzer, of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

But he's lazy, just plain lazy.

He can put on a decent match each night, but he's taking his position for granted. He gets away with the now-infamous 'Five Moves of Doom' every time, and comes out on top.

This needs to change, and fast.

3. His finisher is a joke

You have the skull-crushing Tombstone Piledriver, the face-busting Pedigree and the iconic Stone Cold Stunner. Then you have—the Attitude Adjustment.

Quoting my favorite superstar The Miz, ''Really? Really?''

John Cena's finisher is a joke. A punch to the face might hurt more than his fireman's carry powerslam. And we have to believe he can end matches with it.

"You've got to be kidding me."

4. He waits and doesn't pounce.

Allow me to explain this one.
When a certain superstar has a beef with another guy, he takes it head-on and goes and tackles the guy.

When John Cena has a beef with a dude, he delivers his good guy promo and then waits in the ring for him to attack. John, it's okay to be badass, and it's okay to make the first move.

Stop being a coward, and be a man for a change.

John Cena is long overdue a character overhaul, and I really wish Kane demolishes him at the Elimination Chamber.

He doesn't need to turn heel, he just needs to work on the aforementioned points.
Come on WWE, please give me a reason to cheer for Cena at Wrestlemania.

Your feedback is always welcome!
Cheers!
