Stefon Diggs: What's Ohio State's Plan If the WR Turns Down Buckeyes?

Tim BielikJun 3, 2018

Stefon Diggs' recruitment in the past several days leading up to his announcement later today has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride.

One day he seems to be all Auburn, the next Florida and then Ohio State.

Now, the Washington Post has reported that a source said Diggs will commit to in-state Maryland, joining two teammates from Our Lady of Good Counsel H.S. on Randy Edsall's Terrapins.

There is a reason that the Buckeyes among others have put the full-court press on Diggs—he has undeniable ability.

He could fill the Percy Harvin-esque role at Ohio State, catching balls on the edge in screen passes, taking handoffs or just being a simple receiver.

In other words, he is the type of guy you want to get about 25 touches a game in the offense.

However, the chatter to Maryland is quite concerning despite the fact that the Columbus Dispatch's OSU beat writer Tim May—who has finally joined the Twitterverse—tweeted that a reporter from the Sentinel newspaper in Maryland, Brandy L. Simms. said Diggs would sign with the Buckeyes.

"

Brandy L. Simms of Sentinel Newspapers which cover suburban D.C. said reliable source tells him Stefon Diggs to sign with OSU. Stay tuned.

And despite Simms' messages about how he his source has contacted his mother in recent hours, it's very tough to gauge Diggs' true intentions.

So it's time to ask the question that almost no one wants to ask: What if Stefon Diggs doesn't go to Ohio State?

First of all, it makes very little impact because Ohio State is banned from the postseason regardless of record.

Second, they already have a great athlete, Middletown (Ohio) ATH Jalin Marshall, ranked No. 41 in Rivals.com's early top-100 rankings, committed to the Buckeyes for 2013.

Even without Diggs, the Buckeyes do have a couple of speedy receivers that should be better in Urban Meyer's spread offense.

One guy that should benefit is junior wideout Corey Brown, who's highlight film is a little similar to Diggs as far as shiftiness and burst.

He was never used that way in the past two seasons in a more conventional pro-style offense. But he has shown the pure speed that could be used as a major force on offense.

Devin Smith may be the other player utilized as far as game-breaking speed players is concerned.

Smith is on the OSU track team in addition to working with Meyer and strength coach Mickey Marotti in the offseason.

Either one of these players should be able to temporarily fill in the shoes that Diggs could have filled if he is heading elsewhere.

But should Stefon decide Ohio State is the place for him, the Buckeye offense will be pretty exciting.

If not, it's certainly not the end of the world, nor should it put a damper on an impressive recruiting class.

Diggs would be the icing on the cake which is already amazing as it is.

However, we all have to wait until tomorrow night to figure out what Stefon Diggs has decided upon.
