NBA Rumors: Lakers Would Win with Pau Gasol for Rajon Rondo Flip

Gabe ZaldivarJun 4, 2018

The LA Lakers are in need of a star point guard. Nobody thought their hated rivals would ever entertain gift wrapping one for them.

That is exactly what is facing us on the heels of the most interesting rumor of the season. Eric Pincus of Hoopsworld piqued the interest of pretty much everyone that loves the NBA

At the heart were two sides that hate each other coming together to consummate a blockbuster trade.

Pincus reports the Celtics and Lakers were interested in swapping Rajon Rondo and Pau Gasol. This would be like Han Solo for a cup of sugar.

Nerdtastic reference aside, this is huge. While the possible trade is stuck in rumor mode, it does have some legs, according to Pincus.

"

The Celtics have the potential for sizable cap room this summer but there is no true sense that Dwight Howard or Deron Williams would be within their reach...Gasol has two years on his deal after this season which happens to line up when Paul Pierce’s is set to expire.

The Celtics have shopped Rondo on a number of occasions.  For a number of reasons, sources say Boston does not intend to rebuild their roster around Rondo.

"

Let me say that I have no clue why the Celtics would want to enter in this trade. Rondo is still getting better as a player and Gasol is on the way down.

They would be getting help in the size department, but Gasol is not the hardened center they need, rather a finesse forward who would make them far softer on the inside.

For the Lakers, this would be amazing.

Rondo would bring size and grit to a position they have been dying to get younger at for years. The one knock on the Lakers every season is their aging talent at point.

Rondo is a pure point guard who would free up Kobe Bryant to play much more without the ball and would no doubt get Andrew Bynum far more involved than he is currently.

Sure, LA would drop talent down low, but the emergence of Bynum allows them to spread the talent to all parts of the floor. Gasol doesn't have to be the insurance player on the low block. Barring any further health issues, Bynum has the paint locked down.

I have no clue why Boston would lend a hand to an ailing Lakers team, but LA will certainly take it.
