Lakers Rumors: Dwight Howard to Lakers Talk Will Not Go Away

Zachary D. RymerFeb 8, 2012

One of these days, we're going to stop talking about the possibility of Dwight Howard being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. All it will take is something definitive.

An actual trade of Howard to the Lakers would do the trick. Beyond that, a definitive "Yes/No I want/don't want to go to the Lakers" statement from Howard would do the trick as well.

Neither seem to be forthcoming, leaving the rumor mill no choice but to keep cranking out the good (and overplayed) stuff.

On Wednesday, the latest Howard rumor comes from the Bay Area. In discussing whether or not Howard is a realistic target for the Golden State Warriors. Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News dropped this:

"

The far more preferred teams for Howard’s camp are the Nets, the Lakers and the Mavericks, with the Knicks, the Clippers and maybe the Bulls and another team or two in there as Howard considerations.

"

None of the teams on that list are a surprise...except the Lakers.

It's no secret that the Lakers have been in play for Howard, but it was less than a week ago that Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD reported that the Lakers have been informed that Howard will not sign an extension with them. Since it makes no sense for the Lakers, or any other team for that matter, to rent Howard, this would seem to cross them off the list.

As if that wasn't enough, Kennedy tweeted this:

We then got a report that Kobe had tried to lure Howard by pitching the idea of being the Lakers' own Tyson Chandler, but that turned out to be bogus.

Despite Kennedy's reports, Ken Berger of CBSSports said that same day that the Lakers "remain firmly on Howard's list of three teams he's asked to be traded to." Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed.

So one guy says one thing, another guy says another thing. Wash, rinse, repeat.

It's all getting to be pretty tiresome, and things are going to get even more tiresome as we speed towards the March 15 trade deadline. Even if the Lakers are truly out of it, the rumors are going to keep coming because, well, they're the Lakers.

If you want my advice, the Howard rumors aren't the ones you should be focusing on. There's another rumor out there that the Lakers are looking for a point guard, and it stems from Mitch Kupchak himself.

In addition, the word around the campfire is that Rajon Rondo could be in play for the Lakers if they feel like giving up Pau Gasol.

Now that's a rumor. Moreover, Rondo would be a better get for the Lakers than Howard. Ultimately, he would be cheaper too.

Sounds like a sweet deal.
