2012 NFL Free Agents: The Biggest Boom-or-Bust Players in This Year's Class

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

There are a ton of "can't-miss" free agents in the 2012 class, and many will be re-signed by their current NFL teams.

However, there is also a handful of guys who carry a "boom-or-bust" label. These players have a chance to become solid starters on a new team, but will be extremely risky additions.

Let's take a look at three of those guys.

Jason Campbell, QB, Oakland Raiders

Campbell doesn't have a ton of upside, but he can flourish in the right system with an above-average running game. He was playing well for the Raiders before he was lost for the season, and is a poised pocket passer with a good arm that can make all the needed throws.

He should recover from his broken collarbone, but the question is, is he injury prone?

What's more, will teams be willing to offer him a contract and make Campbell their starting signal-caller in 2012? If he stays healthy, he's a relatively cheap option.

DeSean Jackson, WR, Philadelphia Eagles

When Jackson's "happy" and isn't dropping critical passes, he's one of the most electrifying wideouts in the NFL

There's no doubt about it.

Even in a "down" year in Philadelphia in 2011, he reeled in 58 passes for 961 yards and four touchdowns.

In the right offense—one that frequently features him vertically—Jackson could become one of the best free agent pickups this offseason

Terrell Thomas, CB, New York Giants

Prior to his season-ending ACL tear in the preseason, Thomas was slated as the Giants' No. 2 cornerback alongside Corey Webster this year.

With Webster, Aaron Ross and Prince Amukamara, there's a good chance that Thomas won't be re-signed and could garner some attention in free agency.

He's a decent cover man but flourishes against the run.

There's an obvious risk in signing him, but if he returns to full strength in 2012, the 27-year-old defensive back can be an instant starter for just about any club and boost any defense's run support.
