2012 NFL Mock Draft: The Extra-Special Athletes at This Year's Scouting Combine
Every year at the NFL Scouting Combine, we're all mesmerized by the absolutely incredible demonstrations of athleticism put on by the best collegiate football players in the country as they prepare for the NFL draft.
The class of 2012 is tremendously loaded with special athletes, guys who are entering the league with a ridiculous amount of hype.
Let's check out the players who could make this year's Scouting Combine more intriguing than ever before.
1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
2. Washington Redskins (trade with St. Louis Rams): Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
Robert Griffin III has the potential to put on the most stunning performance we've ever seen from a quarterback in Scouting Combine history. He should participate in all the main events and blow his position away athletically.
The guy nearly qualified for the Olympics as a track star at Baylor. A sub 4.4 in the 40-yard dash isn't out of the question, is it? He has video game-like accuracy on deep throws and should show off his surprisingly strong arm. I'm pumped to watch this world-class athlete flaunt his unbelievable natural abilities.
3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC
4. Cleveland Browns: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU
6. St. Louis Rams (trade with Washington Redskins): Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina
7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina
8. Carolina Panthers: Michael Brockers, DL, LSU
9. Miami Dolphins: Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB, Alabama
10. Buffalo Bills: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina
Ingram is 6'2'' and a bulky 278 pounds. However, as evidenced on that fake punt and interception, he has the athletic ability of a pass-catching tight end. It's extremely fun watching him in his relentless pursuit of the quarterback, and he should put on a show in the speed and agility drills. Actually, all the top pass rushers in this year's class are rare athletes.
Don't be surprised if UNC's Quinton Coples has an eye-popping performance as well.
11. Seattle Seahawks: Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB Illinois
12. Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Kuechly, LB, Boston College
13. Arizona Cardinals: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
14. Dallas Cowboys: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
15. Philadelphia Eagles: Vontaze Burfict, LB, Arizona State
16. New York Jets: Nick Perry, DE/OLB, Southern California
17. Cincinnati Bengals: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Richardson is 5'11'' and 215 pounds, a workout warrior and deceptively fast and agile running between the tackles and when he bounces to the outside.
The Scouting Combine is his event, his time to especially shine.
He was phenomenally productive in the NFL's farm system, the SEC, but can prove to be worthy of a top-10 selection after an astounding showing in all the drills, especially the bench press.
Richardson is the complete back and will demonstrate how gifted he is and how hard he worked during his collegiate career.
18. San Diego Chargers: Cordy Glenn, OL, Georgia
19. Chicago Bears: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
20. Tennessee Titans: Zach Brown, LB, North Carolina
At 6'1'' and 235 pounds, Brown is a prototypical 4-3 outside linebacker. He displayed his fantastic sideline-to-sideline quickness and overall speed at the Senior Bowl in the end of January.
Brown should give us one of the faster 40-yard dash times we've seen from an outside linebacker in a while.
21. Cincinnati Bengals: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
22. Cleveland Browns (from Atlanta): Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama
23. Detroit Lions: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina
24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
25. Denver Broncos: Doug Martin, RB, Boise State
26. Houston Texans: Devon Still, DT, Penn State
27. New England Patriots (from New Orleans): Mark Barron, S, Alabama
28. Green Bay Packers: Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
29. Baltimore Ravens: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
30. San Francisco 49ers: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
31. New England Patriots: Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia
32. New York Giants, Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State
