New York Giants Parade 2012: Victory Parade Shows Champs as Boring Team

Michael DixonFeb 8, 2012

You may not quite realize this, but the New York Giants are a boring team. Don't take it personally, Giants' fans, you're just one of 32.

The Giants had their victory parade on Tuesday. In it, Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York took a few notable quotes away showing that while this team can play football, they are not original.  "All things are possible for those who believe," Tom Coughlin said. "We always believed, we always knew we could get here.

It isn't the worst message, we've only heard it in approximately 5 million movies and from every team that has ever won a championship in any sport. Still, we've heard that one less than the one Giants' Chairman gave us.  "On Sunday night, millions of people saw the Giants cancel 'The Brady Bunch'," Steve Tisch said.

Do you see what he did there? It is quite crafty, indeed. You see, the Patriots' starting quarterback is Tom Brady. Most of you probably know that by now, but it was a real mystery before Sunday night that only a select group of football fans knew.

Also, between 1969 and 1974, there was a show on television called The Brady Bunch. What he did here was to combine the names of the show and the Patriots' quarterback, calling New England the Patriots the "Brady Bunch". It is hilarious.

After all, Brady has only been their starting quarterback for 11 seasons, which encompass five Super Bowl appearances, three wins and two league MVP awards. This is a connection that you only make when playing the Patriots in a Super Bowl.

"There's a group of guys in Dallas that call themselves America's team," Tisch said, "but looking out at all of you and the millions of people in the streets [Tuesday], we're 'America's Dream'."

Even the trash talk sucks. You are not America's Dream. You are the dream of roughly half of the football fans in New York City and New Jersey. I am quite sure that people in the heartland aren't more inspired by the Giants' victory. He does get an 'A' for effort though. His quarterback doesn't get that.  "Make it tough, make it possible and finish...Finish games, finish the fourth quarter and finish the season strong," Eli Manning said.

Good to know, Eli. I thought that games were finished in the third quarter and that the team who had the best record after two games won the championship. Do you have any more insights? Something like, "We'll win this game if we score more points."

The truth is that everything about this team is boring, and it's not the Giants' fault. Even their story is boring. Okay, the Giants were the underdogs coming into the playoffs. Take a look at some of the more recent Super Bowl champions to see how original that story is.

2005Pittsburgh SteelersNo. 6 seed
2006Indianapolis ColtsNo. 3 seed
2007 New York GiantsNo. 5 seed
2010Green Bay Packers No. 6 seed
2011New York GiantsNo. 4 seed

None of those teams had a bye week. They all had to win at least once on the road. As a matter of fact, Super Bowl XLIV between the Saints and Colts was the only first Big Game since Super Bowl XXVIII to match up two No. 1 seeds. Yes, in the world of the NFL the Rocky beats Apollo a lot more than the other way around. It sounds good, but it waters down the story.

The NFL's teams of today lack personality. Maybe it's because the league's rules prevent them from staying together for a long time, maybe the player's are just more bland.

Whatever it is, we need a little more out of the Super Bowl champions. They need to be a little more bold, but realistic with the trash talk.

To be fair, we did get this.

But that was Andre Brown, a Taxi Squad player. Give me a big-name player and we're in business. But some practice squad player? I think the Giants can do a little better than that.

Whoever wins the Super Bowl next year needs to deliver a little more personality and punch. With that, the country will truly find a way to embrace them.
