Chauncey Billups Injury Sparks Talk of Bad Mojo and Clippers Curse

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

Chauncey Billups has a torn left Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the season. The news brings the buzz of an exciting Clippers season to a halt, delivering only somber and hushed tones.

The LA Times reported news from Clippers officials that after an MRI, Chauncey Billups was found to have a torn left Achilles tendon and will miss the remainder of the season.

The injury came in the fourth quarter of an overtime victory over the Orlando Magic. In a moment that illustrated how much Billups had left to give this season, he scored 11 of his 18 points in the game during that fated quarter.

He will now hit the sidelines and likely for good. With this type of injury at 35 years old, it is possible that Billups will never suit up again.

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski tweets that we may never see the return of Mr. Big Shot.

UPDATE: Tuesday, February 7th, 7:33 p.m. ET

Adrian Wojnawoski tweets that Chris Paul has his eyes set on a return. For now, it's nice to know the fire still burns.

The sound you hear is Clippers Nation locking their doors to keep the bad mojo out. Lob City is going dark for just a bit until they remember that no curse will derail this uptempo machine.

It's tough to believe such things when you see one of the crucial pieces of the championship puzzle get dealt an injury that could very well be career-ending.

Houston Mitchell of the LA Times wrote on the spark of curse talk around the Clippers, saying:

"

On Tuesday, the Internet was abuzz with fans pointing to Billups' injury as another example of the "Clippers Curse."

One problem. There is no Clippers Curse. What believers consider a curse the rest of the world considers a series of bad management decisions.

"

I will venture to agree with Mitchell, in that I am not about to sign on with fantasies about the bogeyman and sports voo doo.

I will go so far as to say the Clippers have experienced a great deal of bad luck. Most of what has ailed them in the past can be attributed to draft blunders and Donald Sterling gaffes.

With such a huge loss coming amid the biggest and brightest season of the franchie's history, it's hard not to get a little spooked about the prospect.

Billups went down because it was his time. At 35, he was already walking on basketball eggshells. I have no doubt that Lob City is holding their breath, but it's time to let out a great big sigh. These things happen.

Now, if Blake Griffin forgets how to dunk then we may have a problem here.
