NFL Draft 2012: Teams That Must Rebuild Quickly Through Draft to Make Playoffs

Timothy RappJun 5, 2018

Did your team disappoint this season? Do you feel like they are a few tweaks here, a few roster adjustments there, away from making the playoffs?

Are you hoping and praying those tweaks can be filled through the NFL Draft?

Well then, chances are you are a fan of one of the teams on this list. Well, unless you are a fan of the Dallas Cowboys (they have enough talent on their roster to be a playoff team but continue to underachieve) or the New York Jets (no rookie is going to fix that combustible locker room).

Here's to hoping your team nails those draft picks.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles desperately need help at the linebacker and safety positions, and if they let DeSean Jackson walk, they may need a wide receiver as well.

While there isn't a safety worth taking when they select 15th overall, there will be options for them at linebacker (Dont'a Hightower? Luke Kuechly? Zach Brown?) and wide receiver (Michael Floyd? Kendall Wright?)

And with two picks in the second round (45th from Arizona and 47th), the Eagles should be able to plug in talent at need positions. A failure to do so will be the end of the Andy Reid era.

San Diego Chargers

The Chargers would be wise to bring Vincent Jackson back, but if they don't they may be able to snag Michael Floyd when they select at pick No. 18.

A better option? Replacing old man Takeo Spikes at middle linebacker with a studly run-stuffer like Alabama's Dont'a Hightower.

Another option is trading the pick for a package of other picks and attempting to nail later picks, given the many needs this team has.

General manager A.J. Smith and head coach Norv Turner are on the hot seat—fail to draft well, and this team misses the playoffs. Miss the playoffs again, and those two will be gone.

Kansas City Chiefs

On one hand, the Chiefs will feel like a different team when they return Matt Cassel, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Eric Berry, all lost at one point or another this year for the season.

On the other, they are in danger of losing franchise wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and stud cornerback Brandon Carr to free agency.

If they can bring both of those guys back and add an impact player early in the draft—in my latest mock, I project them to add Vontaze Burfict to an already stacked group of linebackers—the Chiefs may just win the AFC West next year.

Cleveland Browns

Let me ask you a question: Did you think the Cincinnati Bengals would be a playoff team this season?

Of course you didn't. And then they added A.J. Green and Andy Dalton and, abracadabra, they made the playoffs.

The Browns currently hold the fourth and 22nd picks in the first round. They may have a shot to draft Robert Griffin III, and even if he is gone they might be able to add studs like Morris Claiborne, Justin Blackmon or even Trent Richardson with the fourth pick, and will be in place to fill any other area of need with the 22nd selection.

Fans in Cleveland desperately want playmakers for the team's offense. If the Browns nail these two selections, they may not only be a lot more entertaining next season, but they may even surprise people with a playoff run.

(Okay, okay, so the Browns aren't rebuilding so much as building. But no team has the opportunity to improve themselves through the draft as much as the Browns do, so I felt inclined to include them on this list.)
