Mayweather vs. Cotto: 5 Reasons to Watch It, Even Without Pacquiao

Takeo SportsJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather will fight Miguel Cotto in May. Let's admit it, we all wanted to read the name of Manny Pacquiao instead of Miguel Cotto, right?

While this is not the dream fight that millions of boxing fans worldwide were hoping for, there are still several reasons why this duel is worth watching—even without Pac-Man.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Larry Merchant

1 of 5

Floyd Mayweather had a brutal post-fight interview/confrontation with Larry Merchant at the end of his previous bout versus Victor Ortiz. I believe everyone has seen it by now. If you haven't, then this video is a must-watch for you.

If this fight doesn't live up to the expectations, then the interview with Larry Merchant probably will. What will Merchant's approach be toward Money May? Will Mayweather even talk to him after the fight, or will he ignore him? Or will both men interact as if nothing ever happened?

Definitely, the interview after the fight is something you don't want to miss.

Manny Pacquiao Fans Will Hope for an Upset

2 of 5

Manny Pacquiao is easily one of the most popular boxers in the world today. As for Mayweather, he is one of the most hated. (Which is kind of logical since Pac-Man fans can't stand Money May.)

If you're a follower of the Filipino champion, you definitely want to watch this fight for the possibility of a Money May loss. However, would that really be beneficial? If Mayweather loses to Cotto, would a matchup with Pacquiao mean nearly as much?

People have seen what Pacquiao was able to do versus Cotto. Now, it's time to see what damage Money May can do.

Miguel Cotto Will Look for Redemption

3 of 5

Miguel Cotto was badly defeated by Pacquiao back in 2009. He was losing on every card and lost by TKO in Round 12.

Cotto followed with three consecutive wins over Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito. However, none of these victories were able to erase the image of his bloody face in the Pacquiao fight.

When you think about Miguel Cotto, you consider him an elite fighter. However, do you consider him as one of the elite in the same category as Pacquiao and Mayweather? Definitely not.

If Cotto wants to ever be considered in the same category, he needs to defeat Mayweather. If not, losses to Pacquiao and Mayweather will forever tarnish his resume and legacy.

Floyd Mayweather Will Give a Boxing Lesson to Miguel Cotto

4 of 5

Floyd Mayweather will be ready for this fight. He has fought every high-caliber opponent possible (minus the ones dodging him).

Money May is a more talented fighter and should easily dominate this fight. Las Vegas casinos must believe the same thing as Mayweather is set as a -650 favorite. On the other end, Cotto is set as the underdog with +475 odds.

Floyd Mayweather Will Try to Provoke Manny Pacquiao

5 of 5

In the past few months, Floyd Mayweather has verbally attacked the Filipino champion several times. It's fair to make the assumption that Money May will, once again, try to provoke Pac-Man after the fight.

Considering that Pac-Man keeps ignoring Mayweather's attacks, I can't wait to see what new approach Money May will take to disrupt/taunt Pacquiao.
