Triple H vs. Undertaker: Why This Is No Longer About the Streak

Tony DolemiteJun 7, 2018

I have no doubt that Triple H will face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 28 this year—it's inevitable. They both know WrestleMania better than anyone and both men are tired and worn out from the years of sacrificing themselves physically to a sport that is unforgiving and demanding. They are both legends for a reason. WrestleMania 28 is their final destiny.

Whether you like it or not this feud is no longer about the streak, it's about so much more.

Triple H nailed the hammer on the head when he was confronted by Shawn Michaels about refusing to face Undertaker. They are the last of a dying breed of wrestler that you may never see again. Wrestlers like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, The Undertaker, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin were special—they still are. They gave us everything and then some.

Nobody handed them a thing. It was about desire, passion and the willingness to take chances. It was about paying their dues and working in front of crowds that would rather spit on you than tell you how great you were, and all for little to no pay. These men believed in themselves because that's all they had to believe in. They all earned our respect time and time again.

I wish the same could be said about today's superstars, who all seem in over their heads when it comes to making the grade. Today's superstars all seem like they follow the same pattern. There's no depth and no emotional investment worth giving them. I won't say I feel this way about every performer who steps through the ropes, that wouldn't be fair to guys like CM Punk, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton and The Big Show.

Still, I can't help but feel that something is missing, like a crash course in how to be charismatic. They need to look no further than Triple H and The Undertaker for examples if they want to step up their game.

When you watch Triple H face The Undertaker, you are seeing two individuals who have transcended the business. Between the two, I think that Triple H still has a few good matches left in him. That being the case, he should be used as a special attraction. The Undertaker, on the other hand, is at the end of the road. His journey is just about over. There really is nothing left to prove anymore. His legacy is cemented. There will be no more rematches between the two, there really is no need for any.

WrestleMania 28 will be the end of one of the greatest rivalries in the history of the business.

The thought that soon both of these warriors will no longer give us the moments that made us and kept us as fans for so long is scary, isn't it? It's like when a long running series finally leaves the air after giving us so many years of fantastic television. No matter what happens at WrestleMania, whether the streak ends or stays intact, it won't matter. What matters is that both men will have taken a step towards immortality.
