The Top 10 Commercials of Super Bowl XLVI

Jacob BornJun 7, 2018

Super Bowl XLVI has come and gone with the New York Giants beating the New England Patriots 21-17. Manning put on possibly the drive of his career to capture his second Super Bowl title.

However, if you are outside of the Upper Northeast, you probably didn't care who won or who lost. You were watching for the commercials.

I will give you my version of the top 10 commercials of Super Bowl XLVI.

(Trust me, the photo will explain itself in the slideshow)

Honorable Mention: Matthew Broderick's Day off

1 of 11

Honda decides to parody Ferris Bueller's Day Off with Matthew Broderick's Day Off.

Matthew Broderick calls in sick to work so that he may stay at home, or rather, go out and do whatever he feels like.

The commercial uses many connections to the movie, like the man wearing the Red Wings jersey on the roller coaster, and the valet taking his CR-V out for a spin.

Overall, good commercial, but not enough to make the cut.

10: "Transactions" with Jerry Seinfeld

2 of 11

Like many of the Super Bowl commercials, this one uses comedy to promote the product—in this case, the new Acura NSX.

Jerry Seinfeld tries desperately to be the first one to own the car, so he persuades the current buyer to give him the keys. The first "gift" comes in the form of a $20 bill, but things escalate from there.

From a surprise visit from the Soup Nazi to sock puppets acting out Jersey Gangland, Seinfeld tries his hardest to get the keys, and does so after leasing his private zip lines across New York to the man.

But, Jay Leno swoops in (literally) and steals the man away by offering a jet pack/wing suit for the keys.

Overall, funny at parts, and while doesn't give a whole bunch of information about the car, Acura uses Seinfeld to promote it.

9: Enjoy Better by Time Warner

3 of 11

Ricky Gervais is known for his stand-up and witty humor, and in this ad (actually longer during the game), gives viewers a bit of his humor.

After denying some random person's Facebook friend request, Ricky gives his thought process behind the decision, when a grenade is lobbed onto the table where he is sitting.

He quickly runs away from the explosions, and subsequent more grenade blasts. The scene ends with him running away into the distance.

This commercial makes the list because it shows why Ricky Gervais is funny along with a side that many people haven't really seen from him. Overall, a good commercial.

8: Bud Light "Here Wego"

4 of 11

Bud Light is notorious for having good commercials at the Super Bowl, and this one doesn't disappoint.

After adopting a rescuer dog, the partiers learn that his name is "Wego." While it is a strange name when they say "Here Wego," the dog immediately goes and grabs a Bud Light for whomever is calling him.

The commercial's dialogue mainly consists of people saying "Here Wego", and then the dog running around grabbing beer for everyone. When a large group rolls in, Wego rolls in a keg.

In addition, the commercial promotes rescuing and adopting stray dogs by going to their Facebook page.

As a child, teachers would always say that KISS was the best way to do things. Keep It Short and Sweet. Short: Check. Sweet: Of Course. Mindless commercial that everyone enjoys: Bingo!

7: NFL Evolution

5 of 11

Many people still watched the game for the football. This commercial is for them.

The NFL decided to put out their own commercial promoting their own game on its biggest stage. The commercial goes through how football generally evolved from when the game first started to becoming the game that it is now.

The transitions between decades is phenomenal, and the overall shooting of the commercial is great.

The commercial promotes the game of football, but I think the Super Bowl itself does a pretty good job of doing that. So, it makes the top 10, but isn't part of the Best of the Best.

6: Battleship

6 of 11

When I first heard that the game Battleship was being created into a movie, I was slightly skeptical. After hearing it would be not two armies battling it out, but the US army versus aliens, I basically gave it the Death Penalty.

After seeing this trailer, I want to take that back.

The people that made Transformers were geniuses, as the three movies were all blockbusters. The aliens look a lot like Transformers, which will bring in that crowd. With large names like Liam Neeson and Rihanna, people will come flocking to the theaters to see it.

Big action, big names, big explosions. Looks like another huge blockbuster action flick. I personally can't wait to see it.

5: E*Trade Fatherhood

7 of 11

The E*Trade baby has fallen into the hearts of everyone in America, and this year didn't disappoint.

The baby and a father has a daughter (perhaps someone that will appear in future commercials), and doesn't know how to provide for his second child. The baby suggests using E*trade and  the financial consultants, which hill help him.

But, the baby notices his friend, and asks what he is doing in the nursery. His response? Speed Dating.

The E*trade baby and his commercials are known for being extremely funny for its one-liners. If this one-liner was a speed dater, you'd definitely try to get her number.

4: The Avengers Trailer

8 of 11

The Avengers may be the most hyped movie of 2012, and its commercial did nothing to stop that.

The Avengers (for those not well versed in comic books) is a team of super heroes consisting of the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye, and Black Widow, along with Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The trailer does nothing to show what the actual plot of the movie is (and I don't really think there will be one), but viewers got their fill of the taste of special effects, action and explosions that will come along with the movie.

The Avengers could possibly be the best movie of 2012, and its trailer makes us want to see it.

3: Act of Valor Trailer

9 of 11

Whenever you have Eminem and a movie trailer, you know it's going to be a good movie.

Act of Valor is a movie following real, active duty Navy Seals in combat. While I personally believe that would be extremely hard to shoot—not to mention dangerous—I will take the studio's word for it.

The battle scenes look like they were taken directly out of a real war, and the plot looks to be thick and have actual meanings and motifs. This movie could be in the running for a few Academy Awards.

Act of Valor looks like the perfect combination of heavy-based plot with lots of action. While this may be a guy movie, I will definitely be seeing this one.

2: M&M's Are Sexy and They Know It

10 of 11

Personally, I think this is the funniest commercial out of the lot.

The Brown M&M is an intelligent piece of candy that is being laughed at because people think she is naked. She replies that only idiots would actually believe she is naked.

Cue the red M&M.

Upon seeing her, Red takes off his shell and proceeds to dance to LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It".

What makes the video so funny is, one—the song is perfect, and two—if you have seen the music video, then you will know (Caution: Video is Provocative).

M&M's does a great job using today's questionable music taste to sell its product. And yes, apparently Red is that stupid.

1: Budweiser—Flash Fans

11 of 11

The best commercial of the Super Bowl wasn't even aired in the United States; it was aired in Canada.

Anyone who has played a sport in front of an empty crowd wants to have that feeling of playing in a packed stadium. For guys who have passed the age where that is a possibility, Budweiser gave them the opportunity.

The game started, and then right in the middle of the game, the rink is flooded with fans cheering on both teams. While the game might have been just another game, to the players on the ice, it felt like Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

As a hockey player, this is one of the coolest commercials I have ever seen. The fact that Budweiser gave these players the chance to live their dream of playing in a big game is huge.

The players said it best. It was crazy. It was so cool. That is what it would feel like playing in the big leagues.

This was the Holy Grail, the Stanley Cup, the Lombardi Trophy of Super Bowl commercials.
