5 Players Who Could Replace John Terry as England Captain
When Chelsea defender John Terry was stripped of the England captaincy on Friday amid his ongoing racism scandal, it took roughly 0.37 seconds for the speculation to begin.
Who would be the next England captain? Everyone had an opinion, including a bunch of us here at B/R, and no one was afraid to share it.
Count us in that group too. Today we’re bringing you a list of five players who could replace Terry as England captain. Just for fun, we’ve ranked them in terms of their likelihood of getting the job, from lowest to highest.
First, though, a word on how we selected the list. Obviously, only current England internationals were considered. And we only considered players who are likely to have spots in England’s starting lineup next summer at Euro 2012.
That’s why you won’t find Frank Lampard here, even though he captained England against Spain last November. The Chelsea midfielder is still a great player, and he very well could work his way back into England’s starting XI by next summer. But for now, he’s not consistently starting for club or country.
As for the guys who did make the list, we sorted out the field based on a number of factors, from experience to temperament to the old-fashioned eyeball test. But what it came down to was something simple: In the end, we went with the player who felt right—and who we thought England manager Fabio Capello would pick.
