UFC 143 Results: Should Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz Have an Immediate Rematch?

Kyle SymesJun 7, 2018

One thing is very clear after the cloud of judgement hovering over the scoring between the UFC 143 main event of Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz: fans will never agree on who won.

Even if fans won't agree on who won, everyone should be in agreement that neither man looked dominant over the other. Diaz failed to adapt his strategy, and Condit didn't get any fans from last night's defensive-minded strategy.

Although Diaz announced his retirement from MMA following the loss, most fans are chalking it up to Diaz's emotions getting the best of him, something that's not unreasonable to suggest.

With reports about Georges St-Pierre's return not coming until November, Condit shouldn't wait to defend his new interim belt.

If and when Diaz returns to MMA, it would be a great idea to have the two men rematch. The UFC did this with BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar when there was a scoring dispute much like the one we endured last night. The UFC also put together a quick rematch between Lyoto Machida and "Shogun" Rua after their bout was a hot topic of discussion.

I'm sure Diaz, like the rest of us, expected Condit to come out and go toe-to-toe with him. Instead, Condit kept to his game plan and fought a smart fight against the more aggressive Diaz.

Despite what Condit said following the fight, Diaz was still able to corner him into the cage but simply failed to get off many of his attempted combinations. If Diaz were to attempt to take the fight to the mat, where he has a huge advantage over Condit, the fight could have played out differently.

We saw in the closing minutes when Diaz was able to secure the back of Condit what a grappling contest between the two men would look like. It was clear that while Condit fended off the submission attempts, Diaz should have taken it to the ground.

Diaz and the Caesar Gracie crew would likely better prepare for the "smarter" version of Condit instead of preparing for the overly aggressive Condit we've seen in past fights.

Neither man would have their careers brought to a screeching halt by losing in a rematch, and with this much outcry from fans, a rematch would be a hot ticket.

Regardless of who you scored the fight for or if you liked Condit's strategy, the judge's scorecards should have read "Need another round."

I know I'm ready for round six—what about you?
