UFC 143 Results: What Carlos Condit Needs to Do to Beat Georges St-Pierre

Kyle SymesJun 7, 2018

Although most MMA pundits will be hung up on how to score the UFC 143 headliner between Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz, the fact remains that Condit still has a huge challenge ahead of him.

Waiting in the wings is the true champion of the welterweight division, Georges St-Pierre.

By defeating Diaz, Condit set himself up to challenge the 170-pound kingpin as soon as GSP returns from his ACL injury.

Condit may have performed the perfect counter-strategy to defeat Diaz at UFC 143, but he's going to need to utilize an entirely different gameplan if he wants to be the undisputed UFC welterweight champion.

GSP won't simply attempt to walk down Condit into a corner. He's going to utilize his footwork, his agility and raw power to sweep Condit off his feet.

If St-Pierre chooses to stand with Condit, look for GSP to work angles to get in and out before Condit unleashes his flurry of punches and kicks.

Condit fought a smart, defensive-minded fight at UFC 143. The same strategy won't work against the best defensive fighter in the game, GSP.

GSP is known for not taking risks, something Condit is renowned for.

Condit's risk taking is what will win him a fight against St-Pierre. GSP hasn't had a fighter "bring it" to him in years. Dan Hardy and Josh Koscheck were looking for their one punch to knock St-Pierre from his senses but the opportunity never came.

"The Natural Born Killer" will need to work his combinations and set up his big power shots. That may prove difficult given how much Condit likes to kick.

As any MMA fan will tell you, kicking leaves you open for a takedown, and GSP has some of the best takedowns in all of MMA.

If Condit finds himself on the mat, something that is very likely to happen, he will need to work for submissions, sweeps or just anything to not be under the most dominant welterweight in the UFC.

As with their original pairing, a fight between St-Pierre and Condit will center around whether Condit can utilize his "go for broke" strategy to perfection against GSP.

Greg Jackson is a mastermind for strategies in MMA, and he will likely give Condit the best gameplan possible to defeat the champion. As Condit said numerous times following UFC 143, it's just a matter of sticking to his gameplan.
