Super Bowl Facts: Ad Rates and Food Figures Highlight Super Bowl Spectacle

Timothy RappJun 4, 2018

Do you want to impress everyone at the party with your ability to recite useless trivia you'll forget in a few days anyway? Do you want a few stock facts and figures you can recite for just about any Super Bowl conversation?

Well then, you've come to the right place. Here are some tidbits about advertising, food and a few other topics during America's football holiday. (All facts and figures from Marc Bona of The Plain Dealer.)

We begin with the absurd cost for a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl:

"

All of NBC's TV-commercial airtime for the game sold out way in advance. Average cost for a 30-second spot? $3.5 million. That's $116,667 per second.

"

In other words, most companies were willing to pay more for a 30-second commercial than the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles were willing to pay Matt Forte and DeSean Jackson this season, combined.

Go figure.

"

Super Bowl ads are 58 percent more memorable than the average commercial, according to Nielsen Media Research.

"

So what was your favorite commercial from last year's Super Bowl? Take your time, I'll wait.

"

An NFL game is 60 minutes. Last year's Super Bowl had 46 minutes, 10 seconds of ads.

"

And the halftime show lasts an eternity. Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

"

The National Restaurant Association estimates 48 million Americans will order takeout or delivery while watching the game.

"

But not just any old type of takeout or delivery...

"

More than 1.25 billion portions of chicken wings will be consumed this weekend, according to the National Chicken Council's 2012 Wing Report. Yes, there is such a thing.

"

I don't think I need to add anything to that. Except this:

"

The No. 1 snack choice during the game for 32 percent of viewers will be dips and spreads, while chicken wings are second at 23 percent, according to the third annual Supervalu Snack Down Survey by Harris Interactive.

"

Good lord, we take surveys about how people will snack in this country. The level of absurdity we've reached is sometimes hard to comprehend.

"

The average resale price for a Super Bowl ticket was reported to top $4,000 more than a week ago.

"

Pay that much and miss the commercials? No, thank you.

"

An RV space at the game was listed as high as $900.

"

Pay that much and have to stay in an RV? No, thank you.

"

Last year's game averaged more than 111 million viewers -- the largest audience in TV history. With two major markets represented and marquee quarterbacks competing (the Patriots' Tom Brady and the Giants' Eli Manning), the game is expected to top that figure.

"

Enjoy the Super Bowl, everyone.
