Super Bowl Line: How Vegas Is Enticing Fools to Bet

Jon DoveJun 7, 2018

The current and updated Super Bowl spread features the New England Patriots giving the New York Giants three points. This shows that most feel this will be a closely contested matchup with a very unpredictable outcome. However, the unpredictability of this game will not stop millions of Americans from gambling away their money.

Wagering against a three-point spread really doesn't have much benefit. For example, the last week of the NFL regular season only featured two games that were decided by less than three points. This means if you're placing money on the New York Giants based on the spread, you could be making a mistake.

This doesn't mean that placing a bet for the New York Giants is mistake, as they have a very good chance to pull off a victory. ESPN's John Clayton put together a good article breaking down the reasons why the Giants should be the favorite over the Patriots. However, most of the experts are truly split on who will actually be this year's Super Bowl champion.

Oftentimes point spreads appear designed to fool or mislead the gambler. Most people would be better off using their knowledge and pick a winner based off of that. They then could go ahead and take a look at the spread and see if that impacts their decision.

The three points also increase the likelihood of a push. There a lot of games that end with a three-point difference, which makes this number a safe line for the oddsmakers. It actually protects the house from having to pay out too much money on such an unpredictable game.

I'm no gambling expert and actually prefer to save my money. However, the Super Bowl offers some unique opportunities to get more involved. There are more than enough prop bets out there that you can avoid betting on the outcome of the game, which I suggest would be a smart move.
