Super Bowl Spread: Reasons New York Giants Will Defeat the Odds

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

The odds men have spoken, and it is the New England Patriots who will be the favorites in tomorrow's Super Bowl matchup against the New York Giants. The problem is, they should have taken a closer look at things.

According to sports betting site bovada.com, the current odds on tomorrow's game have the Patriots favored by three points. While that isn't a significant advantage, they certainly believe that quarterback Tom Brady and the Pats will hold the edge in this game.

The Giants are coming into this game outscoring their last five opponents 141-67. That includes teams like the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets during the regular season, and the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers this postseason.

The Patriots are a completely different offense than all those teams, but their defense really is no better than any of those. This Brady led offense scores a lot more points a game than the Giants, but the Pats haven't exactly fared well against strong defensive teams.

With the way the Giants are playing defense right now, we may see another outcome that was similar to how the Green Bay Packers played in the divisional round.

The Giants held Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to just 20 points on 264 passing yards and two touchdowns. While that was a different game, one could argue that the Baltimore Ravens efforts against the Pats could echo a similar result.

They managed to hold Brady down to 239 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. The Patriots won the game by three, but it could have easily gone the other way.

Could he have any better luck against the Giants? I mean this is one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the sport, but he isn't exactly walking into this game with strong argument.

The last time he played this defense this season, he threw two interceptions. He also was able to throw for 342 yards and two touchdowns, but that wasn't unprecedented for a team that was ranked 29th in the league for passing yards allowed this season.

The Giants defense has been playing lights out this postseason, allowing just four touchdowns in three games against two extremely talented offenses, and one that was looking good so far this postseason in the 49ers.

So where do the Giants take the game in this situation?

This offense, which is playing at an all-time high, is looking impossible to stop. Quarterback Eli Manning has been playing out of his mind this postseason, and so have his receivers in Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham and Victor Cruz.

The Patriots had a hard enough time slowing down Joe Flacco and his receivers in just Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith. He managed to pick apart this defense for 306 yards with two passing touchdowns.

Not to discredit Flacco and all he has done, but Manning is playing much better football this postseason.

For the way this Patriots defense looks coming into the game, they are going to have a hard time stopping this high flying offense. Perhaps they will surprise people, but at this point in time they have much to prove this Sunday.
