NFL Honors 2012: Why Aaron Rodgers Deserves MVP Award over Drew Brees

Andrew KulhaJun 2, 2018

Aaron Rodgers deserves to be the 2012 NFL MVP, even with the historic year fellow quarterback Drew Brees put up.

There's absolutely no question in my mind that Rodgers was the better quarterback this season.

This is the point of the article where many of you tune out and go look to my profile page to see if I'm a Packers fan—which indeed I am—so this is when you immediately comment that I'm just being a homer and a "Packer backer", and that a real writer would see that Drew Brees was the MVP.

So, if you are in that camp go ahead and do your thing. For the rest of us, let's move on and investigate this.

While Brees undoubtedly had an incredible season—with a record breaking 5,476 yards and 46 touchdowns, compared to 4,643 yards and 45 touchdowns from Rodgers—there are certain factors that should propel Rodgers ahead of him in the MVP votes.

Accuracy:

This has to be the first factor when looking at these two quarterbacks and comparing their years. While Brees did put up incredible numbers, he also threw for 14 interceptions and finished with a quarterback rating of 110.6.

Those are still fantastic numbers mind you, but they pale in comparison to the only six interceptions that Rodgers threw all season and the 122.5 quarterback rating.

Rodgers was the most accurate quarterback in the league, and it's not like he was throwing dump-passes all game.

Team And Record:

The Packers were one horrible loss away from going a perfect 16-0, so that has to count for something.

Not only that, but even though their record was easily the best in the league, it could be argued that the Saints had the better overall team. They had a better running game and defense.

Rodgers was working with a horribly inconsistent running game and one of the worst defensive squads from a numbers standpoint in the NFL.

Sure, they got a ton of takeaways, but they also gave up a ton of yards and points. Rodgers had to be at his best every game.

He essentially carried the Packers to their record. It could be argued that Brees had the better overall team around him.

Games Played:

When all is said and done this will probably be the determining factor. Rodgers sat out the last game of the season in order to avoid injury and prepare for the playoffs.

Brees on the other-hand had the benefit of playing all 16 games.

Their numbers aren't that far off.

Conclusion

Rodgers played one less game, had less to work with and was the far better overall quarterback, yet still only threw one less touchdown and finished 833 yards behind Brees.

Also factor in Brees playing indoors for half of his season, and I think it's clear that Rodgers will be the MVP.
