Alec Baldwin NFL Honors: Awesome Hosts NFL Should Consider for Future Shows

Zachary D. RymerFeb 3, 2012

For the first time ever, the NFL is giving out its annual awards in the league's very own awards show, and it found the right guy to host the proceedings.

The NFL proudly announced in January that the first ever NFL Honors Show will debut on Saturday, and Alec Baldwin will be your host.

Yup, that Alec Baldwin. Jack Ryan from The Hunt for Red October. Or, if you're too young to know a good movie when you see one, the guy from 30 Rock.

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of the NFL doing its own awards show, but I'll watch just for Baldwin. Well played, NFL.

The question is how the NFL is going to top Baldwin in future NFL Honors Shows. He's a hard act to follow.

It just so happens I have five suggestions.

Rob Lowe

OK, so Rob Lowe's career as an Adam Schefter-like NFL insider got off to a rocky start, but the dude is a pretty big football fan.

Some might question whether or not Lowe is truly cool enough to handle NFL Honors' duty, but I give him the nod for two reasons: he starred in Tommy Boy and because he's apparently friends with Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. I want to be friends with Irsay, so I tip my cap to Lowe in this regard.

Lowe could definitely handle hosting an awards show. He's been in showbiz for a long time, and I assume he has enough time on his hands.

I mean, honestly, how much time can Lowe's TV career possibly take up?

Chad Ochocinco

Say what you will about Chad Ochocinco being a washed-up, over-the-hill wide receiver, but the dude is nothing if not entertaining.

Though he has some catching up to do, Ochocinco is becoming the NFL's answer to Shaq. He's tried his hand at several jobs, most notably professional soccer and bull riding. Neither endeavor went particularly well.

Luckily, NFL Honors wouldn't require Ochocinco to run around or ride a wild animal. He would merely have to talk, which is something we know he can do.

We also know Ochocinco is going to need a new gig in the near future. His playing career isn't going so well.

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais is not as popular in the states as he should be. If you don't know who he is, he's the guy who created The Office. The original one, not the overrated American version.

The last two years, Gervais has hosted the Golden Globes, much to the disdain of all the Hollywood celebrities that he has mocked throughout both shows. Some of his jokes toe the line. Others cross it. They're all equally hilarious.

So if the NFL wants to pursue a more comedic flavor for the NFL Honors, and is looking for somebody with experience, Gervais is the man for the job.

Though, I guess it would be pretty risky to put a wise-cracking Brit in front of a bunch of monstrous jocks.

Liam Neeson

A decade ago, Liam Neeson was only starring in movies that allowed him to show off his acting chops.

These days, he only stars in movies where he gets to blow stuff up and throat-punch people. You would think that would represent a far fall, but he's actually making the best films of his career at this point.

To my knowledge, Neeson has never hosted an awards show. He was too classy to do it before, and he's too badass to do it now. I also don't think he's an American football fan.

But if the NFL tried hard enough, I'm sure Neeson would listen. All the NFL would have to do is repeatedly stress that the NFL is a collection of the toughest guys in the world. The only way to properly honor them would be to have the toughest guy in the world dish out the awards.

At the end of the show, maybe Neeson could fight a wolf with his bare hands. Because, you know, he didn't get to do that at the end of [SPOILER DELETED].

Isaiah Mustafa

Some of you might remember Isaiah from the 1997 Rose Bowl, when he and the Arizona State Sun Devils took on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Fewer of you will know him as a former NFL practice squad scrub.

Everyone will remember Mustafa as the smooth-talking guy on the Old Spice commercials.

Yup, instant jock cred. And since Mustafaas football experience, I daresay he's the perfect guy to host the NFL Honors in the future.

Make it happen, Roger.
