NFL Honors 2012: Award Show Will Be Huge Swing and Miss for League

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

In light of award-show season with the Golden Globes just happening and the Oscars around the corner, the NFL has decided to take a shot at the whole concept by giving us something called the NFL Honors.

The event will be on tomorrow night on NBC, where the NFL will hand out its season awards on live television. They will go through all of the big ones including coach, offensive player, defensive player, offensive rookie, defensive rookie, rookie and MVP of the year awards.

They will also touch on things like play of the year, fantastic finish of the year, fantasy player of the year and comeback player of the year.

According to NFL.com, the event sounds like they are going to be going full out:

"

Current and former players such as Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Shannon Sharpe and Steve Young will be in attendance as the NFL and The Associated Press announce their annual accolades in an awards show format for the first time. "NFL Honors" will become an annual event from the Super Bowl city. The winners will be on hand to accept their awards.

"

While the concept is nice, and it is definitely different than what the league or any other professional league has done in the past, the show just seems overzealous.

The show will be hosted by Alec Baldwin, with Lenny Kravitz performing. The awards will given out in award-show-like fashion, so this will likely be a glamorous event.

What happened to the good old AP release followed up by a press conference by the stars?

The NFL is taking a huge risk here, and they are likely banking on hoping to find success with it being Super Bowl weekend and all.

It will ultimately come down to if people will actually care. Is this what NFL fans want, or is this just an over-the-top event that is putting a bad taste in the mouth of real NFL fans?
