Madonna Super Bowl Halftime Show: Material Girl Entering Lose-Lose Situation

Gabe ZaldivarFeb 3, 2012

Madonna will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show, which is exactly what I wouldn't do if I were her.

The Material Girl will provide entertainment despite not being in vogue for years. She will no doubt get a boost in downloads following her performance, and her fame will get one last blip on the meter of her fame, but this will end badly.

The Super Bowl halftime show has become a moment that the NFL has decided will be far more miss than hit.

We never get an amazing display of entertainment. In fact, we come away from the show stating how ridiculous or how awful it all was far more often than trumpeting the good parts.

We are a hater nation.

I will be the first to agree that it is far more fun to hate on something than it is to say you enjoy it. With that being said, the halftime show has been the perfect formula for things to scoff.

Madonna is taking to center stage during a moment in time when she is low on the totem pole of who we care about and Twitter exists to mock her for that fact to no end.

So let's see how this will go wrong.

NFL Interference

We can all thank Janet Jackson and her ill-advised wardrobe malfunction. The greatest "accident" to ever take place at the Super Bowl has delivered some awful performances since.

Since that time we have seen far more old farts that were well past their prime get pinned as entertainers for the big game. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony should just be done at halftime and kill two birds with one stone.

The Guardian reports "the NFL has been working with producer Ricky Kirshner." They are taking no chances in another "Janet" incident.

Great.

So, another dressed down and bland endeavor.

Just The Hits

The Super Bowl is one chance for a performer to create buzz. Millions around the world will be watching, but only for the familiar tones of popular songs we remember.

Madonna will be performing old hits along with one new one. Sales will jump for her all next week, and there is nothing short of disaster that will stop that.

Performing, of course, makes financial sense. There is no doubting that. However, this is all about image, and no performer has been saved from ridicule at recent Super Bowls. Even the immensely popular Black Eyed Peas were widely scoffed.

As soon as she plays her new hits, most in the room will have a distance that even a bridge can't cross.

She will make a great deal of money, but the Super Bowl halftime show has been all about making fun of who is performing, and even Madonna can't get around that.
