Giants vs. Patriots Predictions: Bill Belichick's Legend Will Grow in Super Bowl

Adam WellsJun 5, 2018

Bill Belichick has been described as many things throughout his career as head coach of the New England Patriots, but after Super Bowl XLVI the only thing that will matter is he will be a four-time champion.

There is something about the genius of Belichick that no one can describe. When you really look at this Patriots team, particularly on defense, there is no reason that they should be playing in the Super Bowl.

They are one-dimensional on offense, give up more yards than any other team in the NFL except one, yet here they sit with a chance to capture the Lombardi Trophy because they are the most disciplined and focused team in the NFL.

Tom Brady gets the headlines because he is the one on the field, taking the snaps and making the spectacular throws, but it is because of Belichick's tutelage and guidance that he has been able to make it this far in his career.

As Jarrett Bell of USA Today wrote, Belichick has done something that few coaches like to do as their careers advance and the game changes around them: Adapt and evolve.

"

The offensive styles of the Super Bowl teams have had diverse features. The 2001 team survived with a conservative setup tailored for the inexperienced version of Brady, who in his second pro season replaced injured Drew Bledsoe and engineered one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history against the St. Louis Rams. The 2004 team was led by a 1,600-yard rusher, Corey Dillon. The 2007 outfit rode with long passes, many to Randy Moss, while Brady threw for an NFL-record 50 touchdowns.

This season Brady has helped cover for a young, 31st-ranked defense with a scheme that leans heavily on tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski.

"

When you look at this game against the Giants, the Patriots shouldn't win. They don't have as much talent, are coming off a shaky performance against a good Baltimore team and Brady has been hot and cold in the postseason since the 2007 AFC Championship Game.

The reason that the Patriots are where they are, and remain the premier franchise in the NFL year after year despite all sorts of roster turnover, is because of Belichick.

This game is going to be a chess match between Belichick and Tom Coughlin. When you back the Patriots head coach into a corner, he pauses to think about what he has to do and always finds the right answer before it is too late.

So the Patriots are going to be celebrating their fourth championship in the last 10 years, and someone on the team—likely Brady—will win the MVP award, but everyone knows that the scheme and game plan developed by Belichick will be the reason that Irish eyes are smiling in Boston.
