Super Bowl Commercials 2012: Cars.com's Memorable Talking-Head Commercial

Eric BallFeb 2, 2012

Sometimes advertisers overthink their commercials juuuust a little too much.

The Cars.com commercial set to air during the Super Bowl is a good example.

There is a regular guy looking to buy a car when all of a sudden a freakish second head pops out of his back. In horror films, the second head usually ends up eating the other guy, but in this instance, it starts singing.

Huh?

Apparently this guy has a confidence that is impossible to hide. It starts singing an absurdly annoying tune that clearly demonstrates how excited he is about buying a car.

Why is this man so confident? Because he is using Cars.com.

Uhhhh...

It's incredibly annoying and another commercial that is trying to go for shock value. Judging by the comments made by chief marketing officer of Cars.com Carolyn Crafts, that's what she was looking for:

"

"Consumers expect over-the-top advertising, but there is some over-sensitivity out there."

"

I guess.

For me, personally, I prefer to laugh at commercials. A giant talking head that sings an annoying tune is not my idea of comedy. Maybe they are trying to shoot for the kids and women demo, but I don't get it.

The pressure to make a memorable commercial is incredibly high, and companies are going way over the edge to shock you. Hopefully this is one of the worst commercials on Sunday—but even I can't deny it is memorable, for better or worse.
