NBA Trade Rumors: Lakers Must Gamble on Ramon Sessions Deal
To say that the Los Angeles Lakers need a point guard would be the understatement of the century. Their 13-9 record is nothing short of remarkable, given that Los Angeles is relying on Derek Fisher and Steve Blake to man the point.
Fortunately for Lakers fans, help may not be far from coming. According to Tom Reed of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Lakers are not only interested in Ramon Sessions, but they also have something that would interest the Cavaliers.
"The Lakers are in search of a reliable backup to 37-year-old point guard Derek Fisher. They have their first-round selection and a top-20 protected pick from Dallas that could be of interest to the rebuilding Cavs.
"
Sessions would be more than a backup. He would actually be the team's best point guard.
Now, if you're tired of hearing about the Lakers looking to bring in a point guard, know that you're not the only one. Take a look at what this gentleman had to say on Twitter in response to Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Times.
That is actually the point. The Lakers are not going to stage a deep playoff run without dramatically improving the point guard position. Sessions would be an improvement over Fisher or Blake. If you don't believe me, look at the numbers.
| Age | MPG | PPG | APG | FT% | 3PT % | FG % | |
| Ramon Sessions | 25 | 22.2 | 9.0 | 4.6 | 85.1% | 33.3% | 34.8% |
| Steve Blake | 31 | 24.3 | 7.3 | 2.8 | 57.1% | 35.4% | 40.2% |
| Derek Fisher | 37 | 26.1 | 5.3 | 4.1 | 81.0% | 30.6% | 36.7% |
Sessions is younger and plays fewer minutes, yet is better in the majority of the statistics. With Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, the Lakers have a small yet open window to win. They need to do everything in their power to put themselves in position to do that.
The advantage to acquiring sessions is that unless Reed is way off base, it would cost them draft picks. That isn't that big of a deal. They would keep Bryant, Gasol and Bynum, and would have a young spark plug manning the point position.
If Sessions comes to the Lakers, gets more minutes but doesn't improve his numbers, he is still a better player than either Blake or Fisher.
Despite getting 30 points a night from Bryant, 16.5 from Bynum and 16.3 from Gasol, the Lakers are only the 19th best scoring team in the NBA. That is something that has to change if they're going to make a run in the playoffs.
Sessions would provide a spark to the team. He would not only score better from the point guard position, but he would also draw defenders away from players like Bryant.
This isn't much of a decision for the Lakers. They need to go hard after Sessions and bring him to Los Angeles.
