Super Bowl Commercials 2012: Breaking Down the Weakest Spots in This Year's Crop

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

As much as we all look forward to the Super Bowl commercials, not all of them are going to be winners. In recent years, we have seen the spots take a nosedive in quality. With a large number of this year's commercials being released early, it is not shaping up to be a great year for marketing experts.

It can't be easy trying to come up with an idea that is whimsical enough to get people talking, but lately it just seems like companies are trying too hard or completely ignoring the idea of what a commercial is supposed to be.

For instance, the best ad of the last 10 years was the Office Linebacker Reebok commercial. You knew what it was pushing, it was a simple idea and executed perfectly.

Now, all of them just try to be over-the-top funny that it ends up not working at all.

Here are some of the early favorites to take home the title of Worst Super Bowl Spot for 2012.

GoDaddy.com Dream On A Cloud

Look, I understand that sex sells, and Danica Patrick has made a nice career for herself wearing skimpy outfits since she isn't very good at racing. That said, isn't the whole Go Daddy thing played out by now?

The commercials have no imagination or inventiveness at all. It's all about getting people to stare at the television screen and then go to a website where they are promised "unrated content."

As long as they keep ponying up the dough, they will be featured in Super Bowls. Unfortunately, we have to sit and watch it.

Audi Cashes In On Twilight Craze

On the one hand, we should be thanking Audi for creating a car with headlights so bright that it causes all the vampires to disintegrate.

However, the fact that there is any company still banking its hopes on the Twilight/True Blood craze is nothing more than a bore.

When did vampires become the cool thing? Is Stephanie Meyer's mindless, insipid work of art really so important that it had to cause tween girls everywhere to lose their lunch whenever a pasty white man showed up on screen?

Best Buy Doing Whatever It Is Best Buy Does

While the actual Best Buy spot won't be released until the game starts, I am banking on this one being a disaster based on past experience.

In particular, the awfulness that was Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne in spacesuits last year. They were talking about a 5G phone, but the actual commercial was advertising their buy back program.

That's logical.

Perhaps I am just sad to see Ozzy doing commercials with the Bieber. This was the man who helped define metal music back in the 1970s, and now he is doing this.

I tear up just thinking about what madness Best Buy has in store this year.
