English Premier League Power Rankings: Week 22

Joe TanseyJun 7, 2018

Amidst all of the chaos and madness at the end of the January transfer window, there were a full slate of Premier League games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

There were a few interesting stories to take out of this week as Manchester City continued their lack of form in the new year as they lost to Everton.

With a City loss, Manchester United took advantage and after beating Stoke they went level on points with their crosstown rivals.

Arsenal suffered a tough draw with Bolton that saw the Gunners fall to seventh place in the table behind Newcastle and Liverpool.

In the relegation battle, the bottom three, Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn, all lost while Bolton and QPR only managed a point each in a battle that seems to be between these five teams for the rest of the season.

As always, last week's ranking is in parenthesis.

20. Wigan (20)

1 of 20

Wigan extended their poor form this season with a loss at Tottenham to extend their losing streak to four games.

James McArthur's 80th-minute goal was the only consolation that the Latics could take from the 3-1 loss.

The Latics are still sitting in last place in the table ahead of their home match with Everton on Saturday.

19. Wolverhampton (19)

2 of 20

Wolves were given a thumping at home by Liverpool on Tuesday.

The 3-0 loss brought more worries to the fans filling in the seats at the Molineux Stadium that a move back to the Championship may be imminent.

Wolves now play in a relegation battle game with QPR on the road on Tuesday at Loftus Road.

18. Blackburn (18)

3 of 20

Blackburn did all that they could to win their game on Wednesday against Newcastle, but their effort went for naught as they fell 2-0 at home.

Rovers had 26 shots in the game, with only five of those shots being on goal, but still the opportunities were there and they missed them.

Out of the three teams sitting in the relegation zone right now, Blackburn do have the best chance of staying up as their form has been good since the holiday period with eight points out of six games.

17. Bolton (15)

4 of 20

Bolton have finally started to get a string of positive results this season as they recorded their third draw in five games on Wednesday against Arsenal.

The draw came after a win in the FA Cup fourth round over Swansea and a win over Liverpool in the league two weeks ago.

The Trotters are now two points clear of the relegation zone as they have 20 and sit in 17th place ahead of their Saturday visit to Carrow Road to take on Norwich.

16. Queens Park Rangers (17)

5 of 20

QPR were off to a hot start on Wednesday as they grabbed a two-goal lead over Aston Villa, but that lead would eventually be lost.

New signing Djibril Cisse scored in the 12th minute, and an own goal from Stephen Warnock gave the R's the advantage in the 28th minute.

But Villa came on strong at the end of the match and it ended in a 2-2 draw.

Now, it is time for Mark Hughes' club to focus on the relegation battle as they face Wolves at home on Saturday and then visit Blackburn next week, as they look to stay above the drop zone.

15. Swansea City (14)

6 of 20

Swansea were all set for victory against Chelsea at home on Tuesday, but that result went awry thanks to a last-minute own goal.

Neil Taylor's 90th-minute own goal put the game at a 1-1 draw and took two well-deserved points away from the Swans.

The good news for the Swans is that they are in good form since the new year started . They have taken seven points in four games, including that famous win over Arsenal.

14. Fulham (13)

7 of 20

The amazing ability of the in-form Clint Dempsey was on display again on Wednesday at Craven Cottage.

Dempsey scored his 10th league goal of the season in the 69th minute to open the scoring against West Brom.

However, the American's goal was not enough as the visitors equalized and sent both teams home with a point.

13. Stoke City (10)

8 of 20

Stoke were outmanned on Tuesday at Old Trafford and gave up two penalties which resulted in the two-goal deficit that they lost by.

The Potters lost 2-0 to Manchester United. They now have one three games without recording a win in the Premier League.

Tony Pulis' club are gearing up for a busy February. Europa League play starts again as well as the fifth round of the FA Cup when they visit giant-killers Crawley Town.

12. Norwich City (6)

9 of 20

Norwich received their first loss of the new year as they were beaten badly by Sunderland.

The Canaries fell 3-0 at the Stadium of Light, four days after they advanced to the FA Cup fifth round with a win over West Brom.

The 11th-placed club will play host to Bolton on Saturday at Carrow Road.

11. Aston Villa (12)

10 of 20

Aston Villa put together an inspiring comeback at Villa Park on Wednesday night against QPR.

The comeback started in the first minute of the second half with Darren Bent's 100th Premier League goal.

After plenty of chances on goal, Charles N'Zogbia scored his first goal for the club in the 79th minute.

The Villains could have scored more goals but were stopped by QPR keeper Paddy Kenny on numerous occasions in the 2-2 draw.

10. Everton (16)

11 of 20

David Moyes' Everton side have improved greatly over the past few weeks. Their  1-0 upset win over Manchester City confirmed how good they are playing right now.

The Toffees were clearly the winner of the transfer window and on-loan Landon Donovan showed again why he belongs at the club permanently. He had an assist on Darron Gibson's 60th-minute goal.

The club are now up to 10th place in the table as they head to the DW Stadium on Saturday to play Wigan.

9. Newcastle (11)

12 of 20

Four days after their shocking loss to Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round, Newcastle bounced back with a hard-fought win over Blackburn.

The 2-0 win saw goals from a Scott Dann own goal and Gabriel Obertan's 90th-minute goal to seal the win.

Alan Pardew and company will play in the appetizer to Sunday's big match between Manchester United and Chelsea as they host Aston Villa at the Sports Direct Arena.

8. West Brom (8)

13 of 20

Somen Tchoyi was the hero for West Brom on Wednesday. His 82nd-minute goal rescued the Baggies from defeat and into a 1-1 draw with Fulham.

However, with only a draw, West Brom dropped to 15th place in the table with 26 points. They will look to continue to get points in their next few games to avoid any discussion of being in the relegation battle.

The Baggies kick off their February at home against Swansea on Saturday.

7. Liverpool (9)

14 of 20

Liverpool beat Wolves on Tuesday by a score of 3-0 and received a goal from an unlikely source.

Andy Carroll opened the scoring for the Reds in the 52nd minute before Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt both put home a goal each as well.

The goal was only Carroll's third of the season, and it happened one year to the day since he was made a record transfer by the club from Newcastle.

6. Sunderland (7)

15 of 20

Sunderland recorded their fourth win in five games on Wednesday with an easy 3-0 decision over Norwich.

Frazier Campbell scored the opener for the Black Cats in the 21st minute before Stephane Sessegnon followed seven minutes later with a goal of his own.

An own goal from Daniel Ayala capped the scoring in the 54th minute.

The win boosted Sunderland into eighth place in the table ahead of Stoke on goal differential.

5. Arsenal (5)

16 of 20

Arsenal put up yet another disappointing result on Wednesday as they drew away at Bolton.

The goal-less draw marked the first time in the new year that the Gunners took points away from a game, with three straight losses to begin the new year.

The Gunners were dealt a huge blow this week when news broke that Jack Wilshere will be out due to injury for the rest of the season.

4. Chelsea (4)

17 of 20

Chelsea were dealt a great bit of luck on Tuesday night in Wales as they drew 1-1 with Swansea in a game they should have lost.

An own goal by Neil Taylor in the 90th minute gave the Blues the goal they needed to draw level with their hosts.

Andre Villas-Boas now leads his club into battle with Manchester United at home on Sunday.

3. Manchester City (1)

18 of 20

After their dramatic win over Tottenham, Manchester City could not muster up a goal to get past Everton on Tuesday.

The 1-0 loss was only City's third of the season, but it was a costly one as rivals Manchester United drew level on points at the top of the table.

Roberto Mancini and company will look to get back on track on Saturday as they host Fulham at the Etihad Stadium.

2. Tottenham (3)

19 of 20

Tottenham easily got past Wigan on Tuesday at White Hart Lane.

The 3-1 win saw two goals from Gareth Bale with a Luka Modric goal sandwiched in between.

The win puts Spurs comfortably in third place in the table, seven points ahead of fourth-place Chelsea ahead of their Monday night matchup at Liverpool.

1. Manchester United (2)

20 of 20

Manchester United may not have made much noise in the transfer window, but they made noise on the pitch on Tuesday.

United's 2-0 win over Stoke put the Red Devils level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table, with City now only leading on goal differential.

Chicharito and Dimitar Berbatov both scored in the game on penalties.

A tough stretch of big games is up now for United, starting with a visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday to take on Chelsea.
