Miami Heat Rumors: Joel Przybilla Would Be a Smart Gamble for the Team

Matt ShetlerJun 7, 2018

The Miami Heat are off to another strong start to the season, and they've proven to be a pretty deep team along the way, having to fight through injuries to both Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

One thing they could use is another big body off the bench.

That's the reason they need to take the gamble on signing Joel Przybilla.

That wasn't a joke. He's someone that could give Miami some effective minutes off the bench, and that could play dividends in the long run.

According to his agent, Bill Duffey, Przybilla is set to decide between the Heat and the Chicago Bulls by the end of the week.

It's a gamble for sure, and the Heat wouldn't make the gamble unless Przybilla was completely healthy, but if satisfied with his health, they should make Przybilla an offer to bring his talents to South Beach.

For one, it makes sense because Przybilla's strengths are the Heat's weaknesses.

Rebounding and shot blocking aren't major weaknesses for the Heat, but they really aren't major strengths either. Miami ranks in the middle of the pack in both categories.

Przybilla wouldn't be a guy who would play major minutes, but he's a guy that's averaged 6.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in mostly limited action. That's all he would have to do for the Heat. Simply rebound the ball and change and block a few shots.

It would be nice to add another big body.

Then, there is the other reason which would be keeping him away from Chicago.

The Bulls are already among the best teams in the NBA in rebounding and blocking shots. Give them another option off the bench who can do those things, and Chicago is deeper then they already are on the defensive end.

Like it or not, winning the Eastern Conference will likely come down to beating Chicago. Why give them another piece, albeit a minor one, when you can snatch him away?

Przybilla isn't a sexy pickup by any means, but he can be an effective one.

That's why the Heat should roll the dice and sign the seven-footer.
