2012 NFL Free Agents: Which Teams Will Make Biggest Splash During Free Agency?

Jeff ChaseJun 6, 2018

After the Super Bowl concludes, we're going to start to get a better idea where some of the top free agents are going to land during this NFL offseason.

While guys like New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Houston Texans' running back Arian Foster are locked up to stay with their franchises, there are plenty of teams that will be desperate to spend some serious cash on new players.

It will happen, as it always does.

There are quite a few teams who are desperate for some serious playmakers, and there is a plethora of options available come this spring.

In terms of quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and defensive specialists, there are a ton of prominent names that will hit the market this offseason.

These teams are ready to make a big splash by signing these guys.

Miami Dolphins will sign Green Bay Packers Quarterback Matt Flynn

With the Dolphins recently naming former Packers' offensive coordinator Joe Philbin head coach, it was pretty much a shoo-in that Flynn will be heading to South Beach.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but many can assume that the potential star backup will find his best opportunity to start by playing under his recent coordinator.

The Dolphins are in dire need of a franchise passer, and Flynn may just be that guy.

He doesn't have a huge resume, but when he has been given a shot, he has taken advantage.

This season, he only started one game, but boy did he go off. Against the Detroit Lions in Week 17, Flynn made a case for his next contract by depleting the Lions' secondary with 480 yards for six touchdowns. He had one interception, but nonetheless he was strutting his stuff all game.

He had success in his one other previous start, which was last season against the New England Patriots. The Packers lost that game, but Flynn still passed for 251 yards with three touchdowns and a pick.

He still has much to prove, but from what we have seen so far, he could potentially be a stud for years to come.

Back up plan: QB Kyle Orton, Kansas City Chiefs or Jason Campbell, Oakland Raiders

Chicago Bears will sign San Diego Chargers Wide Receiver Vincent Jackson

With quarterback Jay Cutler still needing a big, reliable target in his wide receiver group, the Bears will look to nab one of the big-time free-agent wide receivers in this class.

With Jerry Angelo out of the general manager position, Bears' new GM Phil Emery will want to get things started on a high note by signing Jackson away from the Chargers.

This past season, Jackson had 60 receptions for 1,106 yards and nine touchdowns. That is beyond anything any Bears player accomplished this past season, as wide receiver Johnny Knox led the team with 727 yards and tight end Kellen Davis took the cake with five scores.

The addition of a guy like Jackson would give Cutler a big-time receiver like he had in Brandon Marshall back during his days with the Denver Broncos.

The Bears may still look to draft another wide receiver in the draft, but if they plan on throwing money at a big-time receiver, they can focus on drafting another piece to add to their offensive line.

Backup plan: WR DeSean Jackson, Philadelphia Eagles or WR Marques Colston, Saints

Washington Redskins will sign Texans Linebacker Mario Williams

With the Texans having to throw a ton of money at Foster to lock up their star running back, Mario Williams will be looking to score some big money elsewhere.

The Redskins, who relieved themselves of Albert Haynesworth's deal, will have a shot to improve their linebacker corps by adding a guy like Williams.

Putting him alongside London Fletcher will give Mike Shanahan one of the strongest defenses in the league. With guys like linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, cornerback Donte Hall and free safety Oshiomogho Atowgwe already in place, this defensive could become dangerous.

This past season, Williams was sidelined with a season-ending injury after Week 5. Through those five games, he only recorded 11 tackles, as well as forcing one fumble.

While his numbers weren't there, the former No. 1 overall pick is still one of the premier playmakers in the league.

The Texans have a good thing going down there, but Williams may run towards a more lucrative deal elsewhere.

Backup plan: LB Curtis Lofton, Atlanta Falcons or QB Kyle Orton, Chiefs
