Deontay Greenberry Signs with Houston over Notre Dame: 5 Reasons It's a Mistake

Dan VastaJun 7, 2018

Deontay Greenberry has pulled the biggest and possibly only stunner of national signing day thus far.

The 106th overall rated by ESPN, 49th per Rivals and 46th according to Scout has switched from Notre Dame to Houston.

One of the most gifted receivers in the entire country out of Fresno, CA hauled in 105 receptions for 2,108 yards and 32 touchdowns in his 14-0 season for Washington Union.

Only Deontay truly knows on whether or not it was the "perfect decision" but with the quick hook many believe it is indeed the wrong decision.

However, like anything in life there are pros and cons to tough decisions. Here are the five decisions that will be going against Greenberry with his switch to the Cougars.

Golden Domer Legacy

1 of 5

It may seem a bit obvious, but it still needs to be stated. Competing and playing in South Bend at Notre Dame is something that only the elite level players can say.

Not only are you getting a great education, but the overall experience such as walking from the Gug to the Hesburgh Library toward the Stadium in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus is arguably the best game-day tradition in the nation.

Just to be around campus with thousands of fans worshiping is something you will not see at Houston.

Touchdown Jesus

2 of 5

Yes, Touchdown Jesus deserves its own slide because of the tradition and success that Notre Dame has had for hundreds of years.

Going back all the way to when Knute Rockne coached for the Irish in the 1920s, Notre Dame is often looked upon as the most popular and prestigious sports team (program) among any team in the world.

Although they have not lived up to those expectations in the past several seasons, the Irish are still a respectable program.

Publicity

3 of 5

This goes along with the previous slides, but every single game Notre Dame plays is on national television and they are often the talk of the country.

It doesn't matter if the Irish are 7-5 or 10-2, they will attract the media and fans better than anybody on the planet. With no disrespect intended towards John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium, it does not hold a candle to playing at Notre Dame Stadium.

It is the Mecca of sports in some minds and the entire university is looked upon as one of the best fanbases in America.

Competition

4 of 5

Every week the Golden Domers are going up against the best competition in the nation more times than not.

It prepares you a ton for the next level and maybe they are not playing teams from the SEC, but they often get the best from several Big Ten and Pac-12 teams every single season. Next season they have Oklahoma in Norman in what will likely be a top five primetime game in the nation.

Overall Experience

5 of 5

If Deontay Greenberry said he was committed to Notre Dame for all the "wrong reasons" then so be it.

However, the overall experience is something that is dreamed upon by seemingly millions of kids around the nation.

The Hall of Fame legendary coaches that have graced the sidelines in South Bend is one thing, but the overall smell and feel of fall football at Notre Dame Stadium is like living in heaven.

It isn't an opportunity that any of us get often (if ever) so we can only hope that Mr. Greenberry made the right decision in his heart to play for the Houston Cougars.
