Eddie Goldman to Florida State Over Alabama: How Much Will the Tide Regret it?

Randy ChambersFeb 1, 2012

With national signing day finally underway, the top players in the country are beginning to fall in the hands of a few lucky teams. The team that has the most luck so far is the Florida State Seminoles as they have already landed a few top prospects.

One of their most prized players in this stellar recruiting class is defensive tackle Eddie Goldman. He is another great defensive player that will be a part of a great defensive line for Florida State. At 6'4", 315 pounds, he is very quick off the ball and is an athletic player for his size. He is the ultimate run stopper for any defensive line and will clog up running lanes every Saturday.

He had offers from nearly every top school in the country and picked Florida State over schools like Auburn, Alabama and Miami, among others. And while any team could have really used his services, the Crimson Tide are a team that will likely suffer the most at not landing this year's top defensive tackle.

Alabama had a fantastic defense last season, but are currently trying to fill several holes as they lost key players like Courtney Upshaw, Dont'a Hightower and Mark Barron, along with a number of other defensive pieces.

Alabama also lost Josh Chapman and Nick Gentry at nose tackle, leaving that position wide open for somebody with little to no experience to fill. The Crimson Tide have recruited a decent tackle in Korren Kirven, but he isn't nearly as big or talented as Goldman.

Goldman is a player that could step in right away and become a solid contributor on the defensive line. Now there is a huge hole in the middle of the defensive line that remains and it shows that this defense has more problems than just the secondary and the linebacker position.

Alabama does have Undra Billingsley, Damion Square, Jessie Williams, Ed Stinson and Quinton Dial returning, which still is a talented group. But with them all being upperclassman, the defensive line has to be a concern for the Crimson Tide moving forward.

Players of Goldman's size and athletic ability don't exactly grow on trees.

Florida State really hit the jackpot with this pickup and Alabama is left searching to fill yet another position on the defense.
