Is Florida State Commit Dante Fowler Getting Ready to Flip on the Seminoles?
Florida State has been building up quite a class on National Signing Day, but it could be losing a big recruit in Dante Fowler.
The 4-star defensive end had previously committed to the Seminoles, but he came into the day considering a switch to the Florida Gators.
After so many surrounding commitments, it would be tough to blame him.
Great players love to play with other great players, but if too many block the path for playing time, it could cause some frustration for young athletes.
It is one thing for the team to include talented upperclassmen, but the current recruiting class for the Seminoles might prevent Fowler from seeing the field throughout his collegiate career.
Florida State has already received a commitment from Mario Edwards, the No. 1 defensive end in the country. On the other side of the field, the Seminoles will be able to line up Chris Casher, another 5-star defensive end who could make an immediate impact for the team.
Top defensive tackle Eddie Goldman also decided today to attend the school.
This leaves no room for Fowler, who is one of the best defensive recruits in the nation in his own right. The Florida native is incredibly quick off the football and is a very skilled pass-rusher.
While he might need some more work defending the run, his ability to get to the quarterback is something that every team could use.
One of those teams is Florida, who is trying to revamp its team with one of the best recruiting classes the school has seen in years. The Gators have already received a number of letters of intent from blue-chip athletes with a few more targets still undecided.
Fowler would provide a boost to one of Florida State's biggest rivals.
While fans of the Seminoles might not worry about losing one player with so many other great ones joining, it is important to remember that this switch becomes double when he faces the team every winter.
With the type of recruiting battles that take place in the state between these two teams and Miami, it is important to sign as many great players as possible.
Update: The Miami Herald reports Fowler has switched to Florida.
