Virginia Tech Football Recruiting: Joel Caleb Chooses Hokies over Ohio State

It took until national signing day for Virginia Tech to get a commitment from a high-profile recruit, but the team finally got one with Joel Caleb.

Caleb is a 4-star receiver from Virginia but considered both Ohio State and West Virginia before deciding to play for the Hokies.

With Caleb, Virginia Tech gets an incredible athlete. Like many other top players, he played quarterback in high school, mostly so the ball can be in his hands as often as possible.

In college, he will use his running skills in a more open field at receiver. He already has solid size and strength for his new position and will be able to make great plays once the ball is in his hands.

The receiver will be relatively raw at his new position and might not contribute next season, but there is a lot of upside for this young player. Once he focuses on route running and getting his hands up to speed, Caleb could be a force by the end of his time in Blacksburg.

With the type of game that Frank Beamer coaches, the Hokies could end up being the perfect fit. The longest tenured coach in college football has been successful by using unconventional play-calling and dominating on special teams.

Even if he is not ready to contribute as a go-to receiver, Caleb can come in right away and do some damage on special teams. As an accomplished defensive back in high school, do no be surprised to see him on either side of the football during punts or kickoffs as well.

Defensive coordinators also cannot look past his strong arm that could be used for trick plays at some point next season.
