Chelsea Transfer News: Arrival of Kevin De Bruyne a Good Sign for Future

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

As Chelsea sits in fourth place in the Barclays Premier League and with just three weeks until Champions League play resumes, most Blues fans were probably hoping for a mid-season transfer window splash that would make an immediate impact.

With Belgian Kevin De Bruyne, they won't get that.

They won't get someone who will energize the attack on the left side.

They won't get someone who will add youth and creativity in the midfield.

They won't get a savior.

At least not yet.

With the skills he has at 20 years of age, De Bruyne is actually conceivably ready to step into Premier League play. In fact, he played decently (kind of) during Racing Genk's time in the Champions League.

But he won't contribute this year.

In fact, he won't even be on the sidelines.

After agreeing on a deal that would send De Bruyne to Chelsea today, the clubs also announced the Belgian would stay with Genk for the rest of the season.

That's OK. He is a future star, not quite a present star.

In his 2010-11 season, De Bruyne was terrific. He netted six goals and dished out 17 assists in just 35 total appearances. He hasn't been as good this year, as he has just six goals and four assists in 23 games, but he has dealt with injury. He's also had a more aggressive role, as seen by the uptick in goals.

But when it comes down to it, you don't need to even bother looking at his stats.

All you need to know is that he's a 20-year-old with terrific pace, creativity and is good in attack. Oh, and he's splendid with both feet.

All you need to know is that he's another young, Belgian product. The same country that is producing young talent like Eden Hazard, Moussa Dembele, Romelu Lukaku and many more impressive names.

All you need to know is that this kid is good. He's just not there yet.

So while you jump to criticize this move, just remember De Bruyne will be at Stamford Bridge for the next five years.

Just wait.
