Ronald Darby to Florida State: Seminoles Land 4-Star CB Prospect

It's a good day for Florida State—4-star cornerback Ronald Darby is coming to campus. He announced the news himself in a press conference televised by ESPNU.

ESPN publicist Mike Humes said it best:

Darby, ranked as the 38th-best prospect in the ESPNU 150, was said to also be considering Clemson, Notre Dame and Auburn. He had originally committed to the Irish then backed out in early January.

"

Darby is versatile as an athlete, rushing for 1329 yards and 23 touchdowns and intercepting three passes in 2010.

Darby is also one of the fastest incoming recruits in the country and projects to be an excellent cover corner at the college level, though his physicality has been called into question and may never be a huge factor against the run. I wouldn't expect him to get beaten down the field very often given his afterburners, however.

It's not a huge surprise that Florida State would land Darby, as they have an excellent track program and Darby plans to run track. As Jon Mahoney of ESPN writes, Darby has had quite the accomplished track career:

Also an elite sprinter, Darby snagged Maryland Class 3A state outdoor crowns last spring in the 100 and 200 and on the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and was named the Gatorade State Track & Field Athlete of the Year. In July, he led the Team USA medley relay to a gold medal and a World Youth record (1:49.47) at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France.

“Ronald is one of the most talented athletes that I’ve ever coached,” says Potomac track coach Stan Mullins, who’s coached track for more than 40 years.

Darby could potentially make an instant impact as a punt and kick returner given his athleticism and pure speed, and he's another excellent addition to a Seminoles defense that has seen the nation's top defensive end Mario Edwards and top defensive tackle Eddie Goldman heading to the Noles.
