5-Star WR Stefon Diggs: Breaking Down All of His Top Contenders

Rob GoldbergJun 7, 2018

Few players have earned as much attention on the recruiting scene as Stefon Diggs, but no one seems to know where he will go to school.

Thanks to outstanding speed and elusiveness, the wide receiver could be one of the biggest impact freshman in the country next season.

Diggs has enough athleticism to be an elite running back or defensive back in college, but most project that he will spend his time split outside on offense, where he could immediately become one of best receivers in college football.

The problem is that the Maryland native is still unsure about his choice of schools. It is unlikely he will join his peers in announcing his decision on National Signing Day, and instead he will take some more time to make his choice.

With a choice of almost any school in the country, Diggs has narrowed it down to these five, but do not be surprised if he ends up signing somewhere completely different.

Auburn

When Michael Dyer decided to transfer from Auburn to Arkansas State, it left a huge void in the offense for the Tigers.

Although Auburn is only one year removed from a national championship, the program is heading in the wrong direction and it needs a boost.

Stefon Diggs could be the addition that the team needs in order to regain the past success.

Consider that Diggs has said that playing time is important to him, Auburn will be a good place to get plenty of opportunities to see the field.

California

California has a very delicate recruiting class, with a few great players giving only soft verbal commitments to the program.

After already losing Shaq Thompson to Washington, coach Jeff Tedford better make sure he holds on to the rest of the talented players.

If everyone remains with the team, Stefon Diggs could be the best part of an elite receiving corps that includes fellow incoming freshmen Bryce Treggs and Jordan Payton.

Although Cal finished only 7-6 this past season, the Bears would immediately have one of the most dynamic offenses in the Pac-12 and should be able to score from anywhere on the field.

Florida

Whatever Will Muschamp is telling recruits in Florida has been working so far this offseason.

The Gators currently have the No. 5 class according to Scout.com, and there are a few players remaining that can make the group even better.

Highly-touted players like defensive ends Leonard Williams and Darius Hamilton, offensive tackle Avery Young and cornerback Tracy Howard could all end up choosing Florida on National Signing Day.

If Florida could land at least a couple of these men, Stefon Diggs should jump at the opportunity to build a new dynasty in Gainesville.

Maryland

At first glance, Maryland seems out of place for a recruit that could go anywhere in the country.

However, the team that went 2-10 during the year made a enormous move when they hired Mike Locksley as offensive coordinator following the season.

The former New Mexico head coach is known as an excellent recruiter and has the trust of many top players, including Stefon Diggs.

At Maryland, Diggs would not only receive playing time but would be the star attraction for a school that is desperate to sell tickets.

He would be a program-changing recruit for Randy Edsall to help move towards a better future.

Ohio State

New coach Urban Meyer has gotten a lot of top recruits in his short time at Ohio State, but he is not stopping anytime soon.

The newest recruiting class is full of great defensive players like cornerback Armani Reeves and defensive linemen Noah Spence and Tommy Schutt.

However, there is still a void on the offensive end, especially at wide receiver.

When DeVier Posey was suspended for most of the season, no one else on the roster took his place. Not a single player caught more than 14 passes in 2011.

Stefon Diggs could contribute right away, but he might shy away from the fact that Ohio State can not participate in the postseason for one year.

USC

6 of 6

USC is often listed as a possible destination for Stefon Diggs, but he better look elsewhere if he wants to see immediate playing time.

The Trojans return one of the best groups of receivers in the nation with Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. If Diggs is willing to wait for his turn to shine, it will not be until after quarterback Matt Barkley is already playing in the NFL.

Lane Kiffin will have a very talented team next season, but it is not likely to include the outstanding freshman Stefon Diggs.
