Biggest Super Bowl Heroes in New York Giants and New England Patriots History

James TateJan 31, 2012

The Giants and Patriots are two of the most storied franchises in the NFL when it comes to the Super Bowl. They both have three Super Bowl titles to their credit.

Any time a Super Bowl is won, heroes are created. That is just the nature of the game. Click through to see the biggest heroes in Giants and Patriots history.

Tom Brady

1 of 7

Tom Brady has been at his best in the Super Bowl. He has quarterbacked the Patriots to three Super Bowl titles. In those games, he has gone 81-of-108 (75 percent) for 735 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. He was also good in his only Super Bowl loss, going 29-of-48 for 266 yards and one touchdown.

Brady will enter rare territory if he is able to help New England win Super Bowl XLVI. He would become only the third quarterback in history to win four rings.

Deion Branch

2 of 7

Deion Branch has been a pretty good NFL receiver, but he is one of the best receivers in history when he is playing in the Super Bowl. In his two Super Bowl appearances with the Patriots in 2003 and 2004, he has tallied 21 catches for 276 yards and a touchdown.

There is no question that he is Tom Brady's go-to receiver on this stage. It will be interesting to see if he is able to put up similar numbers this time around.

Adam Vinatieri

3 of 7

Adam Vinatieri is one of the most clutch kickers of all-time. He made countless big kicks in his time in New England. Of course, the most memorable is the one that beat the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI and the one that beat the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Vinatieri's field goal percentage in the Super Bowl with the Patriots was not that good. He was only 4-for-6 in those games, but he always hit the one that mattered the most.

Eli Manning

4 of 7

Eli Manning is looking to join an elite club a couple of steps below Brady's as a two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback.

He was very good in his only other Super Bowl appearance. That game was also against the Patriots. Manning went 19-of-34 for 255 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in that game. He capped a late fourth-quarter drive with a touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress to give New York the win.

Phil Simms

5 of 7

These days, it is hard to remember Phil Simms the quarterback because he is everywhere as an analyst, but he was a very good quarterback for the Giants. He was spectacular for the Giants in Super Bowl XXI, when he threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns against the Broncos.

The 39-20 win over the Broncos in that game was the first Super Bowl win in Giants history.  Simms will always be thought of fondly for bringing the first Lombardi Trophy to the Giants.

David Tyree

6 of 7

David Tyree did not do much in his NFL career, but he will always be remembered as one of the biggest heroes to Giants fans because of "The Catch."

Tyree pinned a long pass from Eli Manning to his head while being tackled by Rodney Harrison in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants probably do not pull off the upset in that game if Tyree is not able to make that catch.

Otis Anderson

7 of 7

Otis Anderson was a stud in Super Bowl XXV for the Giants. He had 21 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown. Some people forget that Anderson did not start that season with the Giants. He was with the St. Louis Cardinals at the beginning of the 1986 season.

Super Bowl XXV will always be remembered for the missed kick by Scott Norwood as time expired, but Anderson put up a performance that should not be forgotten.
