Chelsea F.C. Transfers: 5 Reasons Blues Shouldn't Make Big-Name Deadline Deal

Dan RenfroJun 7, 2018

Chelsea have no business making a big purchase on the transfer window deadline day.

It just doesn't make sense.

For the sake of this article, we aren't counting the imminent Kevin De Bruyne signing as a "deadline day deal." Technically, yes, it is on the deadline day. However, it's been pending for a few days now and it isn't a last-minute purchase.

From here on out, Chelsea need to stay put. They have no business making another big-name transfer.

Another name would just mess things up. If Andre Villas-Boas were smart, he would not sign anyone other than a young player for the future.

Accordingly, I have compiled a list of five reasons they are fine without a move.

1. Made Necessary Moves

1 of 5

Chelsea made the moves they needed to make.

Andre Villas-Boas brought in Gary Cahill to strengthen the defense and Kevin De Bruyne for the future of the midfield. The Blues don't need any other help this year.

For the January window, a team should try to make one immediate impact (if available) and one move for the future. In addition, they should sell anyone unhappy (Alex, Nicolas Anelka) and loan out their younger players (six loans at the time of writing).

When a club looks for more, they reach. They end up with an overrated Andy Carroll, or a seemingly mentally-broken Fernando Torres.

There's no reason to tempt fate.

Villas-Boas needs more time to revamp the squad. He is getting the players he wants, but he doesn't need to make any more moves right now.

2. Team Is Coming Together

2 of 5

Believe it or not, this Chelsea side is starting to look like an actual team.

The tension between the old guard and new guard is still somewhat evident, but it's not as obvious. Everyone is buying into Andre Villas-Boas' system more and more every day.

The players are coming together on the pitch and they seem to be understanding how to play with each other within the system.

By no means are all the problems gone. In fact, we will see a few more poor showings from the Blues before season's end. However, it will be with this squad.

There is no reason to bring someone else in at the last minute. How would he fit in? Would he play against Manchester United? Would he need at least 10 days to figure everything out?

Those aren't questions Chelsea want to answer. As a result, let these guys play out the season. Let them try and qualify for the Champions League and maybe they'll bring home some silverware.

3. Nothing Good Can Come from a Move

3 of 5

What would Chelsea gain by making a big-time move at the last minute?

For the huge price they would have to pay, probably nothing.

There are great players out there for the taking, but they aren't worth purchasing at this point. If the player truly wants to come to Stamford Bridge (and Andre Villas-Boas wants him), he will make the move in the summer.

There is no reason to make a move at this point in the season. It's too tough to fit in.

Chelsea don't have any time to spare. They need to win now and keep winning.

Bringing in another big player would only complicate things and the risk completely outweighs the reward.

4. No Player Is Worth It

4 of 5

Even if Chelsea want to make a move, there aren't any players worth it.

Obviously, there are plenty of players Chelsea could make a quick move for. However, no player would be worth the asking price.

Accordingly, Chelsea have no reason to overpay for a player they could get in the summer.

Some players could be brought in and make an impact for the last half of the season, but none of them would be worth the price. They could be good players, but they wouldn't make or break Chelsea's season.

There will be plenty of moves coming in the summer, but there's no reason to overpay for a player that could end up coming to the club in six months.

5. Stakes Are Too High

5 of 5

Chelsea can't make a move because they have too much at stake.

Bringing in a big-name player changes the atmosphere around the locker room. It adds pressure, brings attention and strains relationships. Chelsea doesn't need any of those things.

Chelsea are currently playing in two competitions in addition to the EPL and they are hoping to qualify for the Champions League once again. They can't add any more pressure or bring any more attention to themselves.

It isn't worth it.

The final few months of the season are going to be incredibly exciting. There will be ups and downs, but Chelsea will hopefully make it out by achieving some glory.

A last-minute, big-name transfer is a big risk. If it works out, that's great. If it flops, the season is essentially lost.

Chelsea have no room to breathe right now and they have no reason to take a risk like this. As a result, they must avoid making a big-time move on deadline day.
