Lakers Rumors: Why Los Angeles Must Gamble on Ramon Sessions to Fix the Offense

Kelly ScalettaJan 30, 2012

The Los Angeles Lakers are inquiring about acquiring Ramon Sessions from the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

According to Wojnarowski, the best news for Lakers fans is that if they were able to do pull this off, they'd have to give up nothing but picks to obtain him.

"

The Lakers have an $8.9 million trade exception, acquired from the Dallas Mavericks for Lamar Odom, to absorb salary. Sessions makes $4.3 million this season, and has a player option for $4.6 million for the 2012-13 season.

I see no way to pass up on this opportunity. Sessions is a far better distributor than anyone they have on the roster right now, averaging 7.0 assists per 36 minutes over his career, and holding a career assist percentage of 32.9 percent.

Those aren't NBA All-Star numbers, but they were accrued on less than fantastic teams, and they are much better than any of the point guards the Lakers are currently trotting out there on a regular basis.

It also gives the Lakers the benefit of adding without subtracting, the supposed appeal of adding Gilbert Arenas. But doing that wouldn't require adding nitro, i.e. Arenas to glycerin, i.e. Metta World Peace.

Not only that, Sessions is a fairly capable defender as well. He is far better than Fisher.

The one flaw is Sessions is not a very good three-point shooter. This year he's hitting a career high .333 from deep, and those are making up nearly half his attempts, though that's likely a product of the offense and team he's on.

With a conventional and capable point guard on the roster the Lakers offense would become much improved, take some of the weight off of Kobe and give them a player who could feed the ball into the post.

In other words, this would be a huge gain for the Lakers. Considering what their options are, it's hard to conceive of a better scenario.
