Royal Rumble 2012 Results: WWE Misses Big by Not Having The Rock Show Up

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

The 2012 Royal Rumble lacked one major superstar that could have really sent it over the top. Had The Rock shown up to mess with John Cena, it would have created much more anticipation for their match at WrestleMania, but the WWE failed to deliver, and the Pay-Per-View suffered.

Cena and The Rock had a feud building prior to Survivor Series back in November, but the WWE hasn't touched on it since then.

Sunday's PPV would have been the perfect time to throw The Rock back into the mix and get people hyped for future shows.

Of course people are going to tune into WrestleMania—it's the biggest PPV of the year. However, since the Royal Rumble is the first PPV of the year, it needs to wow everyone away and get the fans amped for all of 2012.

Sure, the PPV had it's moments, but by not having The Rock at all, it failed to truly reach mega status.

The Rock could have easily busted in and messed with Cena during his match with Kane, which would have definitely spiced that match up. It ended in a double countout, and that was rather disappointing.

Yes, it's something different, but if the WWE wanted to truly go that route, bringing in The Rock for a special appearance would have been the best choice because it would've really kicked things up a notch.

Heck, the WWE could have even had The Rock show up late in the 30-Man Royal Rumble, and just when it looks like he might win, Cena busts out from nowhere to ruin it all for The Rock.

Obviously, The Rock wouldn't need to win the 30-Man Royal Rumble match, but adding fuel to the fire of Cena and The Rock's disgust for one another would have been epic. Instead, the WWE chose not to have The Rock make an appearance at all, leaving the PPV to miss out on something huge.

Dwayne Johnson is a very busy man, shooting several movies expected to be released in the next few years. However, a quick appearance could have been manageable for him, but the WWE failed to bring in a megastar.

Everybody loves the People's Champ, and a short cameo at the 2012 Royal Rumble would create so much buzz not only around WrestleMania but also future RAW shows.

The Rock will be back on RAW on March 5, but the WWE would have greatly benefited if it had had him show up at the Royal Rumble. As the opening PPV of the year, the Royal Rumble needed to blow everyone away, and it could have done that if only the WWE brought The Rock back.
